Metaphors

Metaphor is such a commonly used part of everyday language that I think it is a major songwriting tool without us actually being aware of what we are doing.  Listening back this morning to a recent song, it suddenly struck me that one particular set of lines was just ALL metaphor! 

 

Don’t take much to upset the apple cart
And end up lying on a bed of nails
We’re just a speck of dirt in the great void of space
That we cling to with our fingernails

 

I'm still smiling at the thought
