Pondering

As I was sitting here today thinking, a thought crossed my mind. If you look at what's popular today, most of it has made a subtle, yet dramatic change. TV went to Reality TV. Motocross/Skateboarding, "extreme sports" took things to a whole new level in the past decade or so after X-Games started. News has gone 24/7. What did music do? It went to TV to create reality TV shows. It didn't change music (well it did, but I don't think it took it forwards really), just exploited a hole that needed to be filled in the Reality TV business. So, what has music done? I've heard bands pushing the envelope a little bit but nothing extreme. What bands do you think are pushing the extremes? And how? Does music need some sort of "take it to the next level" awakening? Hell, I don't know. What could music do to take it to the next level?

Interesting!

I guess the only thing music really did was survive.

Food-for-thought Mr. Randy!

One more thought did come to me.

Music became "Digital" which was an enormous, sweeping change.

Think about it....production, distribution, consumption (listening), promotion, musical instruction (YouTube), even creative collaborations.....all went digital.

It's tough to overstate the effect that's had on everything....both good and bad.

Good point. It didn't really change music itself though as much as it did on how we consume it. I guess good music will always be good and that may be enough. Maybe it doesn't need much of a change.

Music went to TV to create reality television?  I don't think so.  THat's what you said.  "You're fired!"  :)

You may be underestimating the effect that American Idol and the likes have had on the music business. To me, that's the biggest thing music has done that I would consider positive (even though I personally don't really think it's all that positive.)

Ah-Hah!  You were talking apples, and I was talking oranges.  I don't think of American Idol, The Voice or other talent shows as "reality television."   For me, reality tv are shows like The Apprentice, Duck Dynasty, The Kardashians, etc.  That's why I disagreed with you and fired you ala Trump.  :),  I totally agree that tv talent shows (and DIsney Channel Music) have had a big influence on the music biz.

Ah, I see. Different opinion then, as I do see them as reality shows, just a different form as the people in both types of shows aren't "characters" or "actors" so much as just people. I guess that still leaves me with the big question of What has music done to up the game?
