I kind of play it by ear. I usually won't repeat a chorus in a song if I feel it's too long. It kind of depends on a few other things as well for though, such as does the chorus sound good enough to be repeated or would it be exhausting to hear it again.

I second this. I used to make the mistake of hearing an amazing song in my dreams and would wake up later thinking I'd write it down later. Unfortunately I co0uldn't remember the lyrics OR the melody. Now I record anything I hear that sounds really good to me to make sure I have it for later use.

Great question. For me it kind of depends. I someitmes hear the melody as I write and someitmes I don't. It kind of depends on varying factors such as the subject matter as well as the genre I may be going for. But someitmes that just somes naturally to me during the writing process rather than after.
