  1. Good topic, Randy. I also agree with everything Thomas said^. I know that some artists put bonus tracks on an album because they didnt fit into the "flow" of the other songs on the album

  2. Recently, I've been using headphones only for my mixes and I feel more comfortable with my mixes now, as opposed to using my monitors. I'm in an untreated 1 bedroom apt so the monitors really wouldn't do much good, but I've also taken the time to really get a feel for my headphones. I also do playback on 4-5 different systems to see what jumps out at me mix-wise. To each his own, I guess.

If and when I upgrade to a true studio environment, I'll bring back the monitors and use the headphones along with them

  3. I've met 1 or 2 people here in Nashville that have made a living by selling their songs…and they live a rather comfortable life. I've also met a lot of writers who try to sell/write mainstream music and haven't made a dime yet. I had the opportunity to see a very successful writer perform a few weeks back…he was one of the worst performers I've ever seen. Bad voice, bad guitar skills…but he wrote songs that other artists wanted to record and were radio hits, so kudos to him. He has a gift for writing songs that people want to hear on their radio.

Nothing wrong with writing songs for mainstream/commercial appeal. It takes a special talent to do that on a consistent basis, and it isn't for everyone.

  4. I remember this tune.  Liked it then and love it now  Throw away tune?  Man I wish I had written a song 1/4 as good as your throw away songs.  I agree with Mahesh.  Beautiful.

Sorry about the tide btw.  My son is graduating FSU this year.  He is still sobbing over the Noles loss.  I am a Penn Stater, so I can't stand Ohio State.  Was rooting for Bama.  I wanted an Tide/Noles finish.  No such luck.

    Hey Dave,

Thanks a lot, my friend. I'm glad you liked it!

Yeah, I was hoping the Tide would finally get a shot at FSU…but you can't win them all. I don't think anyone wants to play the ducks right now :jumping38:

I wrote this song in 2013 for my first EP, and even posted a "full-band" version of it in the critique section last year…it sounded pretty awful. I always considered this as a "throw-away" tune, so I never went back and recorded it. I started playing this song live for the past year and it slowly turned into my favorite song to play. A few days ago, I just sat down and recorded it as a simple acoustic version. This is how it turned out. Hope you enjoy it.

  6. I tend to have my guitar a little higher in my monitor. For me, it helps me play my guitar more smoothly…which also helps my vocal cut through more clearly. If there is reverb at all, I'd rather it be pretty low in the monitor. As far as EQ, I think that all depends on the performer and their equipment. My main guitar tends to be heavy on the mid-range, so I usually cut the mids just a tad.

-I've never used the in-ear monitors, but I'm very interested in trying them out soon.

  7. Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. I have about 300 likes on my FB music page, which I created about 2 months ago. Hopefully these likes are from people that are genuinely interested in keeping up with what I'm doing. FB certainly has it's place for growing a fan base, and I've gotten some very good engagements from my page. I think the key is to focus on organic growth, not the number of likes or "fans".

Unfortunately, some music festivals and other promoters/booking agents only look at the # of FB likes that your page has accumulated.

  8. Gry: Thanks so much, I always love to hear your input. Glad you like it!

Dek: Thank you , my friend. Trust me…I hit wrong notes constantly. I appreciate the kind words, they mean a lot!

    Hey guys,

I had the chance to perform a few songs at a friend's house last night. Here's one of the tunes that I did. Its called "Home" and its from my 2013 EP. Anyway, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Hope you enjoy.

  10. Rob: Thanks a lot, man. Im glad you liked it. I'm guessing we need to plan a Songstuff field trip to the "shoe show" after this topic. I'm always down

Zed: Thanks of watching, and I'm really happy that you like it! cheers!

  11. Hey Maggie,

First off, welcome to the site and thank you for the comments on the "Katie" video. I actually got a lot of help with that video from some members here on Songstuff. Also, thank you x100 for getting my album and the support. It means a lot to me, and I really hope you enjoy it. Now I'm off to go check out your YouTube page!

  12. I think both intros and outros are extremely important. The intro grabs the listener, but the outro can leave a lasting impression…hopefully, making the listener to want more of your music. To this day, one of my favorite endings for a song came from a Dave Matthews Band album Everyday. The song When the World Ends almost feels like it just stops out of nowhere…but it made me want to replay that song over again because I thought it was so cool.

  13. If you're a solo acoustic artist you might want to consider approaching a folk, bluegrass, country or other gigging group or band playing music not radically outside your genre about opening for them.  There may also be "living room concert" private gig possibilities.  Goggle it.  You might also want to consider relocating to somewhere that has more opportunities than where you are.

    Good luck!

    Tyler,

       ^^^This is some great advice.

Also, I would recommend that you keep trying at the open mics. If there is a sign up sheet, get there early and make sure that you get a slot. This is a great place to meet musicians like yourself. A lot of times, the open mic venue will book you an opening gig or a full gig if they like your music.

  14. Michael, what have you done to the video? It's awesome.

How you've managed to capture the images of "Katie" that inspired you to create the melody and then the writing stage of the lyrics and then putting the 2 together.

Truly inspirational and it should be on MTV or similar. Fantastic video that draws you into the songs story and hooks you.

    Well done m8 :thumbsup2:

Super awesome video indeed Michael. Can't wait for you to become famous and charge us $100 to meet you and get your autograph! ;)

    Best to you, my friend.

Hey. Thanks a lot, guys. This video is based off of David's excellent ideas, so I owe him all of the credit.

    Glad you guys liked it!
