  10. Understanding harmony is basic to lead playing, whether you hit more than one note at a time or not. If anything, I try to expand the harmonic potential of a solo by using passing tones, (including chromatic runs) and allude to changes not actually present in the music. Diminished chords are useful for this.

    Picking

Yes sounds most odd. Finger picking takes quite a while to learn, wheras strumming comes quite naturally to most newbies. Of course he must have a sense of rythym to fingerpick, so why cant he strum? As for learning backwards. I knew a fellow who was left handed but taught himself to fingerpick a regular right handed guitar held upside down (with the thin strings uppermost). He was pretty good too; bizarre!

    The Blues

A lot of early country blues players could keep great time but couldn’t keep to a bar structure even on a promise. Blues is elemental music. The form is nearly always very simple & its greatest attraction is that is has the greatest potential for ‘feel’. An improviser can play across the beat with huge latitude and still make it work wonderfully. As a form it has an inherent elasticity.

    Self-critical

I used to feel that way. When I look back at my earlier lyrics, they are truely cringeworthy. So my opinion has not changed. However, my writing has improved since those days, so now, I dont have the problem anymore.
  17. Right Said Fred - Bernard Cribbins
