    Well, to be more exact, what it means is that the music requires extensive use of guitar effects. Thus, the instrumentalists are 'tap dancing' and looking down at their pedalboards most of the time.     Distortion with loads of reverb and delay. And due to the many layers of instrumentals you have to feel the music much more than knowing the theory. It is hard to say what is right and wrong in shoegaze, unlike many other genres, where precision and clarity becomes the main focal, I will say that shoegaze in my humble opinion is a great genre to train your ears to hearing what is good and what is bad, more than what is correct and what is wrong. Some examples of big Shoegaze bands includes My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Ride etc.. Give them a listen!
