  1. 3 Foreign File Sharing Services Targeted by RIAA

The RIAA has obtained subpoenas regarding the operators of three file sharing web sites from the U.S. District Court of Columbia ordering WHOIS privacy services to provide the IP addresses, email addresses and any other identifying information.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia granted subpoenas to the RIAA relating to the privacy protection services of 3 music download sites. In addition they request that the private domain services disable access to those sites.
The targeted sites are Descargaralbum.com, Mimp3.net, and Jou-site.me. Descargaralbum.com and Mimp3.net. permit users to download music files from external sites. Jou-site.me is a small Dutch BitTorrent tracker.
The privacy protection services these subpoenas apply to are Protected Domain Services, WhoisGuard and GKG.net. Private domain registration services can be used to hide personal information about site owners and operators from the public.

The RIAA is still taking music piracy very seriously. Last month alone the RIAA requested that Google remove 836,385 webpages from the Google search index.

  3. A Change For The Better?

In recent times there's been some real changes in the music industry as bands try to woo fans. More than that they are wooing online shoppers by trying to demonstrate an understanding of fans by taking a stance against unreasonable profits of record companies. They are giving away freebies and unusually that includes their music. Does this demonstrate a new understanding of their fans or is it simply just a marketing ploy?

I may be cynical, but the music industry has been looking for new ways to bring their profits back up and to increase their market share. Illegal free downloads and a changing market place have already caused cuts in music industry jobs, and I'm sure there will be more. More to the point the shareholders won't be pleased.

So how has the music industry tried to adapt? No more are tours seen as simply marketing exercises by the business. Ticket prices have sky-rocketed, and merchandising prices are ridiculous. Image is everything and brand derivatives are gold dust. Give away music, let fans set the price they want to pay for an album. When the supposed rapport between labels and artists gets in the way of profit use the age old music marketing tool of controversy to win fans. Music is fast becoming the nice-to-have added extra to support the overall celebrity package; the spin doctors are working overtime.

For a long time people were under the mistaken belief that the music industry was about the music. Music is just the product and the hook and the bottom line is profit. For a long time the industry has been about smoke and mirrors, lies, rumours and insinuation all in the name of money. With today's artists being more business savy than ever before you can guarrantee it's not just the labels. Sure there might be those that dabble with the odd rebellion, but so many are addicted to fame, celebrity and the lifestyle they'll do anything for their next fix. Well that and contractual obligations!

As bands and labels continue to experiment I'm sure some things may improve, but the cracks are showing and some are pretty big. As long as the general public places such stock in celebrity I'm afraid music will just have to sit in the passenger seat.
  4. We have a lot of members releasing songs and albums just now. However, very, very few, if any, use any form of release process. In particular, there is very little in the way of build up to the release. Releases tend to be haphazard in nature.

On many occasions impatience to share their new music seems to be the driving factor. All the artist's development time and budget leading up to the release is devoted to creating the music with marketing and promoting their release being minimal, almost an after thought.

Typically, the artist releases their music into a void, having built up very little expectation for their music. Having, in the case of albums, spent several thousands of dollars on recording and mastering their album and often invested hundreds of hours in completing it, they fail to make the most of all their effort.

Too many times we hear of albums having been released selling (or sometimes giving away!) less than 100 copies. Sometime less than 50.

Is this the fault of the music? No. It is the fault of the artist. Your music could be the best music the world has ever heard, but if it is released into a void it will go nowhere. Few people will hear it. Fewer will download it or buy it.

You cannot rely upon listeners being so inspired by your music that they share your music with their friends, or that somehow the music press will get to hear about your music despite you having done almost nothing to bring it to their attention.

In short, you need a plan.

Over the next two months we will be looking at what you can do to ensure a successful release including some practical tips you can directly use.

    Head's Up

We plan to launch our first products over the next couple of months, including an “Album Release Kit”, containing all the elements you need to pull together your album, from costing and budget, to time-line, example press releases and press kits, background information and best industry working practice, using check lists, mind maps, flow diagrams, guidelines on engaging people and companies to help, release case studies and much, much more.

  9. ASCAP has just released their 2009 financial results showing continuing growth for the performing rights organization.

In 2009 ASCAP reports that it collected more than $995 million, an almost $50 million increase from the $946.7 million collected in 2008. Their foreign revenue grew to nearly $302 million. ASCAP made royalty payments to their 380,000-plus members during 2009 totalling more than $863 million, a significant increase than the $818.9 million distributed to members during 2008.

“Music is performed more often, in more places, in more ways by more businesses than ever before. That expanded music use, combined with dramatic ASCAP Membership growth, market share increases and effective strategic management have led to stunning revenue and distribution growth for 2009.” stated ASCAP CEO John LoFrumento.

According to LoFrumento “Looking to 2010 and beyond, our challenge is to obtain fair rates for the increasingly valuable public performance right over Internet and wireless devices. Because we are an organization of and for songwriters, composers and publishers, ASCAP is taking the leadership role in advocating for copyright and the livelihood it makes possible for music creators.”

The operating results were delivered by Mr LoFrumento during the General Annual Meeting, which launched their “I Create Music” EXPO. Video of the ASCAP General Anual Meeting 2010.
Over the last year there has been a big increase in the number of bands creating promo videos, and not just gig footage. At Songstuff we try to help artists develop and hopefully improve the standard of the songs that they produce. If you are making or planning to make a band promo video then you'll find the Cutting Room a useful resource.

Post up your video links and get constructive criticism from fellow musicians and video creators:

Over the last year there has been a big increase in the number of bands making promo videos, but not much in the way of help or critique.

    Look no further:

The Cutting Room is available for bands and artists to post links to their promo videos and get help from other artists and video makers to hone their videos into professional standard products.
  10. Billboard Unveils New Charting Methodology

Billboard has revealed a new methodology for some long-standing genre charts. Hot Country Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Latin Songs charts are all receiving the upgrade. Each of these charts have had a face-lift incorporating digital download sales (tracked by Nielsen SoundScan) and streaming data (tracked by Nielsen BDS from services like Spotify, Rhapsody, Rdio, Muve, Slacker, Xbox Music and more) which, along with Nielsen BDS monitored radio airplay, will help to determine the 50-position rankings.

This brings these charts into line with the methodology being used to determine the song ranking for Billboard's all-genre chart, the Billboard Hot 100.

At the same time Hot Rock Songs, which has been an airplay-only chart since 2009, and Rap Songs, which has been a radio survey since 1989, will now both include digital download sales and streaming data.
  11. The blog and gallery have been updated with a number of small bug fixes and a list of major improvements:

    Blog

    User Interface
The user interface has had a complete facelift to bring it up to standard. The new look feels more 'bloggish' and enhances the experience. We have added drop down menus at the top so that you can quickly access common areas and start new entries where you have permission to. The post screen has been overhauled to add functionality. You should find the new version much easier to navigate and easier to use.

    Blog This!
This is a brand new feature that adds a "Blog This" button to every post. This allows you to use post content in your blog entry. Furthermore, the relationship is remembered and all linked blog entries appear at the bottom of the topic when viewed.

    Per-Entry Rating
You can now rate each blog entry rather than just the entire blog itself. The blog rating is still shown on the homepage as an aggregate of all rated entries.

    Report Item and Reputation
You can now report an entire blog entry, or just a single comment. You can now also give someone a reputation increase/decrease in comments.

    List View
A common request was the return of a fully sortable and filterable list view for blogs that emulated a forum view. We have added this in. You'll notice you can click the table headers to sort on that column and click again to reverse the sort. There is also a "List Blogs" sidebar block to quickly filter and list the blogs. There's even a little 'preview the latest entry' icon that shows the entry excerpt in a pop-up so you don't have to leave the page to preview it.

    Dynamic Sidebar
We have moved some the footer links (Top 10 bloggers, etc) into a dynamic sidebar along with Recent Entries. This makes it easier to locate and saves a bit of space.

    RSS Imports
Another long requested feature was to be able to create entries from an RSS feed. This is now a feature. You can control which member groups have access to this as well as limit the number of items imported on each cycle.

    Gallery

    Friendly URLs
We've integrated gallery into the global FURL system used by IP.Board 3, this will allow gallery to create friendly URLs for categories, albums, and images.

    Category/Album Covers
When viewing an image, you will have a new option to set that image as the 'cover' for the category or album that contains the image. When a cover image is specified for a category or album, that image will always be displayed, in place of the last uploaded image thumbnail. Permission dependent.

    Sub Albums
Albums now support unlimited sub albums, which work exactly like gallery sub categories.(Permission dependent)

    Profile Picture Album
You can now create a new kind of album, a 'Profile Picture' Album. After this album has been created, any images that you upload to it will be displayed on the change picture page in your User CP, making them easy to select as your profile image.

    Image notes
Image owners are now able to add notes to sections of their images, positioning and resizing them to suit. Other members will be able to see the notes when hovering over the image. (An example)

    Image rotation
Images can now be rotated in 90° increments, to compensate for those photos taken in landscape or portrait, but saved in the wrong orientation.

    New slideshow
Completely rewritten slideshow feature! It is now a unified interface, loading images on demand as necessary. Users can play or pause the slideshow at will, or jump to specific photos using the thumbnail bar.

    Friends-only albums
When creating an album, users can now choose to restrict viewing to only those users who are on their friends list.

    Reputation support in comments
We have added support for IP.Board's reputation feature in comments posted within IP.Gallery.

    Detail

    New Default Style

Blog has been overhauled with a fresh style, one which feels more like a traditional blog. Additionally, it has been designed with themes (see below) in mind, so there is plenty of room for future designs.

    Themes and Custom Headers

We can now install 'theme packs' and allow users to choose which of these themes will be applied to their blog. Using themes you can completely change the look and layout of an individual blog. Users are also able to create their own unique theme, these user themes must be approved by an adminstrator before they are publically viewable by other users. The new custom header system allows us to create multiple header images for users to choose from.

    Content Block Plugin System

It's now much easier to create custom content blocks, using a new plugin system. It's now possible to define settings for a plugin that apply to individual blogs, this means that we can integrate with 3rd party widgets that require a unique username for each blog. There are also included new content blocks in this release: Twitter, MyBlogLog, Google Reader, Friends Blogs, and Recent Visitors.

    Social Bookmarks

A new bookmark manager allows us to define bookmark services for your blog system. These services will allow blog entries to be easily submitted to the bookmark services that you setup. There are several preconfigured services: Del.icio.us, Digg, Facebook, Mixx, Reddit, and Stumbleupon.

    Media Integration

The new tag allows you to automatically convert various media types into a more useable format. FOr example, [ blogmedia ]http://www.test.com/somemp3.mp3[/ blogmedia] would be converted into a mp3 player for the specified file. By default we include: Flickr Image Set, GameTrailers, Google Video, MP3 Player, MySpace Video, Veoh, and YouTube.

    Akismet Integration

It's now possible to use Akismet to filter spam for both the comment and trackback system. (not enabled yet, wehn it is trackbacks will be activated)

    Feedburner Integration

Users can now override the default rss syndication and use FeedBurner.
  13. BMI has released its 2009 Annual Review highlighting several aspects of their operations, admitting that it had been perhaps the most challenging in the organizations 70-year history.

According to the report, BMI realized revenues in the 2008-2009 fiscal year of over $905 million with royalty distributions totaling more than $788 million, both figures higher than BMI's results from the previous year. An operating expense of approximately 13% was recorded for the year 2008-2009.

The report states that BMI recognized that the opportunities in the digital shift in its very early stages. They go on to reveal that more songwriters affiliate online than via any other method, with more than 30,000 affiliates being added to the BMI roster over the past year.

The figures published include a categorized breakdown of domestic licensing income of:

    Cable and Satellite: 29%
    Broadcast Television: 17%
    Radio: 36%
    General Licensing: 16%
    New Media: 2%

International revenue was dominated by income from Western Europe:

    Western Europe: 68.8%
    Asia Pacific: 13.6%
    Other: 17.6%

The organization’s New Media and Strategic Development grew revenues by 11%, with a portfolio of 6,700 digital media properties under license to BMI.

“As BMI marks its 70th anniversary in the year ahead,” said BMI’s President & CEO Del Bryant, “we know we will be looking at an extremely difficult economic environment. We will maintain our intense focus on efficiency and cost containment. We anticipate tough discussions as we negotiate new agreements for the use of our repertoire. However, we are encouraged by the steady growth in our market share, and by the expanded use of music by both traditional and digital media, two dynamics that drive our licensing revenues. These factors reinforce our ability to meet the challenges of this volatile economic landscape, provide a point of stability to our songwriters, and produce added value to our customers as the economy works its way toward recovery.”

  14. Celtic Connections 2010 comes to a close tonight, after an extremely successful 17th year. For the third year running, attendances topped 100,000 with gross ticket sales reaching over £1 million. This was the festival’s fourth successful year of working with principal sponsor ScottishPower.

Music fans attended approximately 300 concerts, ceilidhs, talks, free events, late night sessions and workshops, which took place in 18 venues across Glasgow over 18 days in January and February.

The festival’s final night sees performances from The Peatbog Faeries, Saltfishforty, a very special 15th birthday bash for Chemikal Underground – headlined by The Phantom Band – and the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year Final.

The diverse and ambitious programme explored the links between Celtic and world music and brought musicians from all over the world to Glasgow, with acts from as far afield as Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, India, Africa, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Norway, Serbia, Romania, Canada and the USA visiting the city.

Festival highlights have included an extraordinary performance by Bobby McFerrin, with the singer also holding a workshop for local choirs and entertaining school children from all over Scotland in a Celtic Connections schools concert as part of the festival’s Education Programme. Other highlights have included the ScottishPower Pipe Band joining The Chieftains and Ry Cooder on stage at their show at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, and The Treacherous Orchestra performing around Glasgow on an open-top bus to celebrate their sold-out show in the Old Fruitmarket.

Other sold-out shows have included The Chieftains with Ry Cooder, Danny Thompson and Friends, Natalie Merchant and the hugely popular Transatlantic Sessions, which will go on tour immediately after the festival bringing a dazzling international cast of Celtic and Americana musicians to concert halls across the UK following its sell-out success in Glasgow.

The final weekend of the festival also featured a major showcase of Scottish music, with over 150 international music industry delegates in town to sample the cream of Scottish musical talent performing as part of Showcase Scotland at Celtic Connections. The largest gathering of the international music community in Scotland, Showcase Scotland provides acts with the opportunity to perform in front of promoters, record labels and agents from over 20 different countries. The exposure that artists gain leads to record deals and overseas touring contracts, promoting Scottish music and artists to new audiences around the world.

Showcase Scotland works with an international partner each year and in 2010 shared the stage with Norway, with top Norwegian acts Majorstuen, Synnøve S. Bjørset, Gjermund Larsen Trio, Unni Boksasp Ensemble, Skaidi and Valkyrien Allstars appearing over Celtic Connections’ final weekend.

The Celtic Connections Education Programme celebrated an extremely successful 12th year, with the schools concert strand featuring its most high profile line-up ever as Bobby McFerrin, Naturally 7, The Treacherous Orchestra and Le Vent du Nord gave free concerts for school children across Scotland in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

For the first time ever, the Celtic Connections Education Programme worked in partnership with Culture and Sport Glasgow to take the festival out of the city centre and into local areas with the Celtic Connections Community Concerts as BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award winners Bodega performed in Barlanark, Knightswood, Penilee and Langside.

Every year at Celtic Connections the cream of new musical talent perform at the Danny Kyle Open Stage. A diverse panel of judges – from industry stalwarts to members of the general public – then pick six winners from the eighty acts which took part. The Danny Kyle Open Stage 2010 finalists – all of whom will perform a support slot at next year’s festival – are Ben Powell, Seonaid Aitken, Kilairum, Michael Clark Trio, Rachel Sermanni and Lurach. The Open Stage was broadcast live on Celtic Music Radio, which also broadcast Iain Anderson In Conversation, the Gordon Hotchkiss Afternoon Session as well as New Voices from the Strathclyde Suite.

Celtic Connections continues to attract visitors from all over the world, expanding the international profile of the city as a tourist destination and affirming Glasgow’s place on the cultural map. The results of an economic impact survey carried out at the 2009 festival revealed that Celtic Connections generated a total of £6.6 million of new output to Scotland in 2009.

Donald Shaw, Celtic Connections Artistic Director, said:

“We’re delighted with the continued success of Celtic Connections. This year we had some really amazing acts on the bill, and fans and performers came to Glasgow from all over the world to enjoy two and a half weeks of great music.”

“A personal highlight was Bobby McFerrin’s phenomenal show in the Concert Hall – it was a really special night. We were so thrilled that he agreed to give a concert as part of our Education Programme too, it was a real coup for us.”

Celtic Connections 2011 will run from Thursday 20th January - Sunday 6th February.

  16. Why?

A re-structuring of our Community boards has been long overdue and it has been a fairly major set of changes.

    Community members have requested :

Simplified Navigation Less Forums and Less Scrolling On the Community Index Page

The new structure simplifies navigation of the boards in a way that new members should more easily find their way around. With the new structure you will also find you don't have to scroll as much as you used to as the number of forums displaying descriptions has been greatly reduced and several boards were merged. We now have sections dedicated to copyright questions and discussions and to Music Marketing and Music Promotion.

Several boards were re-named so that the names themselves better reflected the use and focus of the board.

These are just some of the improvements that we have planned to introduce over the coming months.

  17. Completed Lyrics

In addition to the Song and Recording Critique boards, Lyrics Critique board and the Completed Works board we have now added a board for Completed Lyrics. This board is not for works in development but instead it is intended for showing off your completed lyrics and/or posting works in the hope of finding a composer to work with as a co-writer on the track.

Musicians take note.... we have many talented lyrics writers looking for composers! this board should be an ideal place to keep an eye to find a lyricist for collaboration or simply the lyrics to that great tune you have sitting on a shelve...

    Guidelines Changes

We are changing the critique board guidelines from requesting a minimum of 3 critiques per individual song lyrics posted for critique to just requesting a minimum of only 1 critique per individual song lyrics posted for critique.

The reason for this change is to encourage those who currently post lyrics for critique without reviewing the work of other members to take a more active part in the critique process.

Important: We remain committed to encouraging writers to take part in the critique process as a method of developing their own songwriting skills. Reviewing the work of others is a much underrated tool by writers of all kinds and for that reason more than any other we strongly encourage you to post more than the requested 1 critique per song of your own.
