Protest is a right, which was exercised by the musicians. Conspiracy theorists also have the right not to buy Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, or not to listen to radio stations who play them. That's consumer buying power, though some might call it "cancel culture." OMG, they're not playing Neil and Joni anymore, just because the station is losing listeners!

I have no problem with musicians protesting. I just don’t listen, because they protest from a perch.

Musicians calling for censorship is the height of hipocrisy.

Thanks Jim! I wanted it to be apolitical. Hopefully where it touches on politics it is about things politicians commonly share.

John - no apology necessary. It was very well done on a subject that needs to be kept on the front page.

No need to apologize.  I realize that my quote might have been considered inflammatory or offensive.

I look at politics strictly as a matter of Political Science abstractions.  I would never be a partisan of the world's second or third oldest profession.  We all know what the first is.  Whether priests preceded politicians or the reverse is uncertain 😁

My bad. I play that song and I really never did or apparently

Even listened to the last verse. I may have been trying to stir the pot to liven things up also.

Believe whatever you like.  It is on the album Beggars Banquet and the lyrics can be found on any lyrics site on the Internet.  Google is your friend.

I stand corrected on the lyrics. You are correct. I beg your pardon.

I believe your lyrics are.....fake news, and they did not write the song.

  6. John- I like this. The arpeggiated part, it isn’t the notes, or the chordal tones, but I think the cadence of it, reminded me slightly of The Who’s Love Reign O’re Me. I wouldn’t change a thing. Many songs put to mind others, Chuck Berry or Bo Diddley rhythms have been and still are used constantly. How many songs do you hear reminds you of someone trying channel Whitney Houston? Nice song, it really sets a mood. I can see it as the sound track for some solemn movie scene, with the middle section building some type of temporary immediacy for the subject. Nicely done.

  7. No matter what you think of either party, calling to silence someone is censorship. NY is an artist, no artist should call for censoring. So I'm glad that Spotify didn't blink to Neil. I have loved a lot of his music over the years, but in  most other aspect, imo he is an a..hole. The ultimatum was an elitist move. He has not been relevant on the political stage since 'Ohio'. Now he is just a rich man trying to bend people to his will.  He heard something he didn't like and figured he had the clout to make it go away. It's the typical view of the liberal, all people have rights and freedoms, unless you don't agree with them. Then they want them silenced or erased. Neither party in this speaks for me. I can make my own decisions and I don't want the people who don't have my views silenced. i decide what I listen too. There is way to much misinformation on both sides of this coin.

  8. No real ambitions. Just the thrill of trying to see my idea become something I feel has some musical value, mostly to me, but it is nice to get a little validation from other like minded people, like the people on this site. It would also be nice to improve a little with each attempt. Self satisfaction I guess.

"Modes," of course, are easiest to see on keyboard instruments, because by definition each ("equal-temperament" ...) note is equally accessible.  All other instruments might naturally favor only some modes as being easiest to reach – or, as in the case of non-fretted stringed instruments, might be capable of venturing beyond "equal temperament" entirely.

Thanks for sharing what I am quite sure is a great book for guitarists.

Mike - I made a copy of your post and it now has a spot in the folds of that book. Really good post. Thanks

The critics trashed this album when it came out. But Miles hadn't touched his horn in 5 years---and you can't get brass chops back right away. It takes TIME to build the embouchure up. And what have those critics done in music? That's right, and thanks for reminding me---NOTHING.

I like Miles's solo in this best. The song is a well-meant tribute, but not memorable really, other than a vehicle for him, so I guess it succeeds on that level. And they were friends and family (and Columbia's George Butler) drawing him back out, so the project was kind of a labor of love and a tip of the cap from a younger generation of musicians to a wise 50-year-old who definitely deserved the props.

But with each successive album after this (from 1980) Miles got stronger. Star People ('82?) had some good blues and he was really getting in shape. Good band, too---and Miles was always wise enough to know to take a new band on tour before recording. After a few months on the road not only is the band acquainted personally, but the repertoire is known and ripe for recording...

Hey you ask and that was it at the time. Oddly, though I'm a guitarist, I am now listening to the horn heavy, no guitars.....

  11. Took it. I am also with Rudi - I don't promote diddley. I do think its a little interpretive. The term 'listeners' made me think. It kind of, as a majority depends on age. For instance my teenage Granddaughters have no interest in independent music, for the most part the younger generation goes with the social flow, even those who are musicians (when I was younger I wanted to be Pete Townshend or Jimmy Page and be a group destroying hotel rooms). As we mature our taste and musical knowledge expands. For me now once a band becomes mainstream/radio friendly, I tend to lose interest and look for something else. There will always be exceptions, but for the most part I want to experience a personal new discovery. For instance Josh Stone, I first heard her on public radio, a little girl with a big voice singing legitimate soul music ---- then they talked her (for the most part failingly) into trying the diva route. I had to move on. We all have our own examples. That's why we gravitate toward independent music and look forward to hearing music on this site.

I think that's the most long winded I've been. I like the shadows.
