Dylan Writing

Hey

To be honest, Dylan is about the lyrics, but like most folk based music don't underplay the importance of the melody. Like most folk music his lyrics are often ballad in nature, with particularly his early lyrics having that "beat poets" political edge.

Dylans songs did develop and change quite a bit. Is there a particular Dylan era you are interested in?

Cheers

John

Dylan always showed you what was going on in his songs, instead of just telling you. He would describe all the stuff around his point in order to flesh out a vivid picture in the listeners mind. You don't just know how he (or the "narrator") feels, but what led to those feelings, and where they're goning to go. Also, never waste a line. Every line should describe something or convey a certain feeling. As for music, listen to the blues, folk, classic pop, early rock, old country music (before 1970), and bluegrass; and know your scales and theory. Now, forget all that, let it stay in the periphory of your mind, and just play with the chord progressions and melodies that move you.
