So I am having trouble distinguishing between these melodic ideas. Can anyone help me with this?

 

Question: Match the following terms with the correct melodic idea

 

Original Melodic Idea:   5 – 3 – 2 – 1 – 2 - 3

 

1. Imitation

2. Inversion 

3. Retrograde

4. Augmentation

5. Diminution

 

A.  10 – 6 – 4 – 2 – 4 – 6

B.  7 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 4 – 5

C.  2.5 – 1.5 – 1 – 0.5  - 1 – 1.5

D.  5 – 7 – 8 – 9 – 8 – 7

E.  3 – 2 – 1 – 2 – 3 – 5

 

I am pretty sure Retrograde is E but I am having trouble with the others. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you for the help! If you're curious, this problem set it for practice purposes. However, I guess Im confused as to why Imitation couldn't be C since wouldn't it just be an imitation of the original melodic idea but just in half?

Just as A is double... Which are the definitions of augmentation (double) and diminution (half)

In essence they are evolutions of the imitative concept, and augmented and diminutive are special forms of imitation.
