yamaha dx7 as master midi keyboard

Recommended Posts

Let's say I want to use my DX7 as a master keyboard.

Is it necessary to have a midi cable running from the output of my midi interface into the input of the DX7 as well as the cable running between the other two jacks?

I have a small midi keyboard (25 keys) with a midi interface and i want to use the DX7 for more performance but i'm having trouble with the midi. If anyone wants to help me out please do.

nevermind

figured it out myself

only, my dx7 is having this problem where it will continuously play a note, it's like it constantly uses one of it's polyphony to sustain a note, so after i repeatedly hit a key a bunch of times, that key becomes the one sustained, and i can play a sequence of notes while that one plays? any ideas?

seems to me that you're getting some kind o "midi feedback"?

I don't know if I understood your 2nd post, but if you want the DX7 to be the master, you should just run a cable from its midi out to the midi in of your interface...

now if you want to use the sounds of the DX7 with your sequencer and use it as a master at the same time maybe you should disable the "local mode" in the DX7...

I'm not sure about that because I never had a DX7, but I remember doing that with a Kawai K4 a lot of time ago.

good luck!

let us know how you work it out...

Hari has it right.

You should also be able to issue a midi reset, which is effectively an all notes off message. If you want to close the loop to play midi sounds, make sure you turn local to off.

yeah, a decent piece of equipment, you know, it's got all the features of say a novation xstation or a m-audio ozonic, just nowhere near as high quality, the axyz dome works well enough, 'specially for experimental stuff, i'm pretty satisfied, but the audio-interface could be alot better, i wish i had had another 300 for the xstation...
