Copyright Question

I have a question about copyright laws... Someone has asked me to do a video for them using their family photos and videos.  In addition they requested some background music which they purchased and want to give to me to put in the video.  Can you tell me if this is a violation of copyright law?  Two potential scenarios:

1. I do this for free for them (I don't believe this is a copyright violation since it is for their personal use)

2. They pay me something for putting the video together (again they purchase the song for use in the video)

Thanks

It also depends on what you mean by them "purchasing" the song. Did they buy it on iTunes, a CD or some other form of simply purchasing the song to listen to it? If so, it definitely could/will be a violation as Tom stated above. If they actually went and purchased the permission to use the song, and paid whatever they needed to for it, then I'm pretty sure you/they are good to go.
