Singing while playing

I am a new guitar "learner" and an old dog.  Why is it so difficult to play and sing at the same time?

We've ALL been there so just hang in there and what Tom and David said, work on the simpler tasks first and eventually you'll be able to do it whichever way you choose. Don't be discouraged though by what I'm about to say next but I feel a need to be honest with you, I'm not saying it doesn't require quite a lot of practice to get it down because it does, but boy is it worth it in the long run. Nothing beats just sitting down being able to play and sing for a while. Nothing. It's worth the hours.
