Hello,

I'm an untalented tone def noob that likes a challange. After many fustrating years of trying different instruments, I finally picked up the ukulele and taught myself to play. I can manage about a dozen chords and know where the notes are on the fret board. I have a few talented musician friend's and have picked up some music theory over the years. I'm interesting in writing folk music, but wouldn't mind dabbling in other genres.

2 things I need help with, can anyone recommend an easy to use music writing app for android, and can anyone tell me what notes go with what chords?

Thank you

Roy Brewster

Hi Tom,

Actually, I understood what you said, putting it into practice is a different matter. I have a decent grasp on theory, just short on talent and application. Between what you said and a bit of online research I think I get the gist of matching the chord with my melody. In my case I have a chord progression I like and want to match a melodie to it. My instruments are the ukulele and ocarina in C. Thanks for the help.

What chords are you specifically wanting to know about? Ie- a key of C will have C-Dm-Em-F-G-Am-Bmdim and the key of G has similar chords except the Dm is now major the F gets sharpened and diminished and the Bm gets undiminished. So if your progression just has these chords C-Em-G-Am, it could be in either the key of C or G (or their relative keys but nevermind that for now). That at least narrows it down to 2. The only difference between them notewise is F and F# so you can play a melody using all the other notes (abcde and g) freely and then decide whether the F or F# sounds best. That should give you your answer. :)
