Have any of you ever thought about why you write songs?

You might not believe me but I had never even thought of writing songs until the last spring.  It happens quite suddenly for me without any visible reason. Though sometimes it seems to me that the gift of songwriting came to me as a consolation - my mom's  serious illness has completely changed my life. The music helps me to bear it.

A music idea may come to me along with a line of lyrics so all I have to do is just  develop it, and that is the most enjoyable thing. I have written several songs  and an instrumental play by now. Since I'm a novice in songwriting I very much hope to get all kind of criticism and advice here.
