MIDI Guitar 3

Recommended Posts

I can't play guitar for toffee, but I do love this kind of tech. When I worked in music school, I knew a composition prof who had a Godin guitar with MIDI.  He was very virtuosic on it, and I always loved spending time in his studio with him showing me this stuff, even though I had no hope of using it myself.

I think it opens up real new sonic possibilities when you use an instrument with a specific interface (like guitar strings) to control something that isn't naturally played that way.

I must admit, I haven't explored MPE really. I know of its existence and have some plugins that can make use of it, but I've yet to find a way in my own simple music to make use of it. I don't have a controller that can transmit it, though I know my DAW (Cubase) can make use of it. Since I don't have much in the way of musical coordination as a performer, the lack of "live" performance instruments to use it isn't really an issue for me since I could still make use of it after the fact if I could figure out a purpose in my music for it. I'll add it to the list of things to fully explore :)

I think it's awesome how tech like MIDI can really open up new creative possibilities. Even if playing guitar isn't your thing, it’s cool that you had the chance to explore it with someone who could show you the ropes.
