How about the theme from Match Of The Day ?

All it needs is lyrics.

Will the anthem be English or British? The current anthem, in my opinion, would be classified as British. But what does it mean to be English, and without monarchy?

All we are asking for is our own national anthem like Scotland and Wales.

The British anthem which we borrow would stay the same.

Nothing to do with getting rid of the Monarchy

I believe non official anthems are adopted. The Scottish and Welsh 'anthems' you mention weren't written as anthems (although they are very anthemic) they just became assoiated with with their nation because they were adopted! If enough people at a football match start singing the same song over and over, it will become the anthem of that particular team. In the case of my team, the anthem is 'Good Night Irene' (No wonder we're struggling!) What do they sing at the last night of the proms? Is that not an English anthem?

Can you help Tom and I to complete lyrics?

'Goodnight Irene' - Huddie Leadbetter - great song, great song - impressive it's still around and being sung.

Interesting that the Lomax name got insinuated into the writing credits.

There's a story there.

Don't they have two big numbers at the Proms ?

'Jerusalem' and 'Land of Hope and Glory'.

Find 'em both very stirring.

I object to Jerusalem for its divisive credo, and Land of Hope and Glory as being embarrassingly imperialistic and disrespectful to Edward Elgar’s original Pomp & Circumstance theme.

Match of the Day has a certain claim in that it represents a nation overrun with mindless football thugs, but I would rather try to live that down than play up to it.

In Australia when they did it Waltzing Matilda was in the referendum

They chose the New composition Advance Australia Fair.

Maybe someone on this forum could do the same. [smiley=drums.gif]
