Cd From The 90's With Earthlink Embedded?

Recommended Posts

Strange, I borrow a greatest hits of Blue Oyster Cult from my girl and bring it to work to download and it pops up wanting to install an ancient version of earthlink access. Seems pretty strange to me, anyone else ever see that? The CD plays on a CD player and real player even knows the names of the songs on the disk with the exception of a data file at the end of the tracks. The CD appears to be a store bought sony greatest hits type deal. Here is what the hierarchy looks like:

hey

I've seen this with more modern cds, but not many 90s CDs. It must have been a late 90s pressing.

My guess is an early attempt at an interactive CD. Artist have dabbled in such things many times, though nowadays they just assume you have an internet connection to connect to a fan site, I'm guessing that's why they want to connect. Other common uses for data space on a CD are hidden vids etc.

certainly dual mode CD tech has been around since mid 90s. You looking for an explanation for how it works?

Cheers

John
