Independent writers and artists face several large disadvantages when they are compared to signed, mainstream writers and artists.  Disadvantages that add up to making it a competition that indies can’t win. Hell they can’t even compete.

Lack of budget and poor contacts are fairly obvious disadvantages. Lack of experience and a lack of knowledge restricts songwriters and artists alike. Lack of an overall strategy, and a limited set of incomplete tactics, makes for a critical problem when it comes to marketing and promotion. Copying major artists might work for a small number of tactics, but the overall strategies used by major artists are completely unworkable for indies. That means that you can easily waste a lot of time and money trying to emulate artists in ways that could never work for you.

Of course, indie artists need to carry out their own marketing and promotion activities. They need to learn music marketing from a different perspective and to a different level of detail from their major label equivalents.

One key advantage signed writers and artists have is that someone oversees their development. If they need any form of help with development, they get it. Learning comes in many forms.

One common method is creating opportunities and goal setting. The output may well be something tangible, like new songs as a result of a songwriting camp, a play date with a number of songwriters, but make no mistake the writers are expected to learn and improve.

The same principles can be used for learning songwriting skills, production skills and music marketing.
