  1. To me, the blues always has lines repeated, generally through the verse, or at the start. It's always about sad topics. And sometimes it will be the same line repeated but slightly altered.

And the chorus always sounds similiar to the verse, so much so that you can't tell that it's the chorus until you hear it the second time. And because the verses are repeated, it's hard to tell which is which.

The above may be a load of nonsense, but when I think "blues" that's the kind of thing I think. If I was made to write a blues song, it would probably follow the above.

  2. This is probably very picky - but can you name any songs actually written by Elvis Presley ?

There might just turn out to be some but they'd sure be news to me.

Hm - I guess you're right. I'm not much of an expert of either Elvis or Cash, (I debated adding both to the list) but I assumed that Elvis wrote his own songs. Fair enough.

  3. Wow - this topic really blew up. I can't even remember what the original question was!

I had a kind of revelation yesterday - I don't know if it's happened to anyone else, but I was playing on my bass, and I just kinda realised that the bass is the only instrument I wanna play. I already knew it was my primary instrument, but it just really hit me yesterday.

Did something similiar ever happen to anyone else?

  4. I'm afraid the only way to find out about that guitar is to buy it and see... It could go either way, but realistically it will (probably) not be great. However, it might be good enough for you to play on and get to a stage where you NEED a better guitar, or if it's not going to be your primary instrument, and not used for recording, it will probably be fine.

That said I would advise checking out local shops, you would (hopefully) be surprised at the prices... I was last time I looked! That way you KNOW that your money is well spent, even if it does end up being somewhat more...

I know you really can't go by sight alone - but why would that guitar be bad?

Based on the stats, I didn't think it looked too bad?

  5. Fingers sounds way better for everything but punk.

It's smoother, and cooler, and you can play faster over multiple strings with your fingers... If you want more volume, turn it up! Just go listen to some of this guy.

    Lol.

Personally I enjoy playing bass with my fingers more anyway, just feels better/more fun. :)

Hm - I find it faster with a plectrum, and less chance of making mistakes.

It might be because I learned on a plectrum and started using my fingers later - that I'm used to using a plectrum now.

I play quite a lot of Sex Pistols/Blink stuff anyway, were it definitely sounds better with a plectrum, but even bands like The Beatles and Nirvana, I find the plectrum increases the sound?

    Might just be preference.

  6. I prefer to play bass with a plectrum because it makes it sound louder, and in my opinion, gives it a cleaner sound. Is that acceptable? Is it really that big a deal? Will I be looked down upon for using a plectrum?

Sorry if the answer's simple - I'm just curious for opinions. I know of quite a few bassists that play with plectrums, but I've always been told to use my fingers.

  7. Thanks for that link.

I never realised guitar was so complicated. I thought it was just strum chords or play notes, learn to read tabs and you're off!

Oh well. I'll give that site a good reading over.

  8. Hey, Jules. Sorry if this got a bit out of hand. Bottom line is, music is complicated. But it is also a lot of fun. Just take what's useful now and toss the rest. When you're ready to study more, it's always there. Don't let it overwhelm you.

No need to aplogise - all the information is both (mostly) new to me, and also of great interest.

Thanks to anyone that's contributed to this post! :D

  9. I learned on an electric and bought an acoustic later.

I've been told the main reasoning behind learning on acoustic first is that it builds up your fingers, because the strings are slightly thicker.

I think it's just prefrence. I wanted to play loud music straight-away, so I learned on an electric.

The chords are the same, everything's the same, so I would just choose based on prefrence.

  10. But, seriously, thanks for all this info, particularly Lazz - it might take a while to digest, but it looks to be both interesting and neccessary.

    Thanks.

  11. Of course - I've only been learning guitar for about a year, but I plan on keeping it up for a long time. Any information is greatly appreciated.

  12. To be perfectly blunt - no.

As far as I was concerned, I knew where to put my fingers to get certain chords, power chords and bar chords, but I never really questioned what the chords were made up of.

  13. Wow - I didn't know that.

I thought chords were always meant to be strummed, and if you were plucking the individual notes, it was called an "arpeggio"?

    Cool.

  14. As a sort of improvment excersise, I wrote a song today that just had individual notes for the chorus.

It was quite difficult to get the sound just right, and very difficult to play while singing, but it made the song sound a lot more full than just strumming chords.

I don't think I could do that all the time, but it was interesting to stray away from what I'm used to.

    Thanks for all the replies.
