  1. Does anyone know where I can get one fairly cheap?

I'm strapped for cash, but desperately want a good acoustic guitar, (amazingly haven't gotten around to getting one yet).

They've got em' on Youtube but upwards from like 80 pounds. I'm afraid even that's out of my range.

    40-50 would do.

Doesn't even have to be Fender, just one that isn't utter shit.

Will I even get one that isn't utter shit for the specified price range?

  2. After reading an article that John posted here recently, about "what chords to use when", I went back and looked at the 12 songs I had written and realised that 7 of them started with an Am chord, and that all 7 of them also had a G chord at some point in the chorus.

Is that acceptable? The choruses are so different otherwise that I wouldn't have noticed unless it was pointed out. They number of chords and melodies are all very different. It's just they all start with the same chord.

Should I re-write that music, or is okay to a certain degree?

  3. Persevere with it.

    It gets easier each time.

I find it very difficult to tab songs - unless it's a band that is known for using lots of power chords, when it can be very easy, but otherwise it's incredibly difficult. I don't know how people can pick out just the bass notes with the guitar and drums and vocals over the top of it.

  4. I have to agree with you - I can't sing loud to save myself - (I can hardly sing quietly either, but go figure) but when I sing softly or practically in a whisper, then I sound good enough, as soon as I start trying to sing "properly" I fail.

I'll be interested in the answers to this thread.

  5. This might seem like a stupid question, but I'm curious.

I got a guitar and a bass last year at the same time, because my cousin was moving and had one of each to give me, because he couldn't take them all to college.

So I started taking guitar lessons. But I put off the bass lessons because, (and this bit might sound stupid) every successful or brilliant musician that I can personally think of say they were self-taught.

It might not have any significance, but I've noticed that the best musicians that I either meet, hear about or listen to tend to be self-taught.

Is that coincidental? Or does taking lessons actually somehow hinder your musical abilities?

Like I said, it might seem stupid, but I really do wonder.

I've put off having bass lessons for a year because of this. I now tend to play bass a lot more than the guitar. Riffs come much easier to me on the bass.

But I might get bass lessons depending on what people here have to say.

What do you think? Am I crazy and superstitous or does this theory hold some merit?

  6. Yeah, I think I'm gonna stop scrapping them, and just store them on a memory stick or something out of the way.

Just a few days ago, I really regretted scrapping a song, and now I can't remember it.

I am glad I'm not the only one, I thought I might have some sort of low self-esteem disorder.

  7. It could just be the familiarity of the song! When you buy a new album, you tend to play it to death! Then you get used to it and think it's not the dogs dangly bits after all! When you say you 'scrap' them, do you mean you just don't like them any more? Or do you physically erase them?

I mean I physically erase them, so they're unretrievable, unless I'veposted them on here of course.

You're probably right in terms of familiarity, but it can get frustrating - maybe I should just stop scrapping things all together, and maybe it'll come back to me.

  8. I've been wondering if this happens to anyone else, because it happens to me all the time.

I'll write a song and I'll think it's absolutely brilliant. I'll spend ages writing music for it and playing it all the time and I keep thinking to myself: "this is killer,"

And then a couple of months later I decide it's not good enough and I scrap it.

It's alright for the odd song, but when I'm scrapping pretty much everything I've ever written, (bar about 2-3 songs that I've always kept) it's getting a bit annoying.

So my question is really how can you stay passionate about songs you wrote years ago?

I've got a friend that moved away to England for a year due to his dad's work, (used to be in a small band together) and until he comes back and we can record stuff I said I would just keep writing.

It's been about 6 months now and I've written one song that I'd even considering recording.

Does this happen to anyone else?

  9. I like dry toast...

I think the main reason is that he was taught by his older brother, who is infamous for being not only not very good at guitar, but thinking he's a god at guitar.

My friend views chords as shortcuts, but I'm not really bothered, because despite me not being the best guitarist, he is one of the few people I can have the nerve to say is a fairly terrible guitarist.

I just thought I would post for your opinions.

P.S. Where were the implicit contradictions, by the way?

  10. Thing is I wasn't using chords only, I used some chords in the verses, but I had plenty of sections without chords.

His argument wasn't: "You use too many chords,"

His argument was: " You shouldn't use any chords",

  11. Hi,

Pretty much every song I've ever written to music has used chords through verses and chorus, and recently, I was playing one and my friend objected. I'll try to show you what went down through the medium of text:

    (Playing song)

    Friend: "That's just chords."

    Me: "Uh...yeah."

    Friend: "Bit lazy."

Me: "Well the start and the pre-chorus aren't chords..."

Friend: "Yeah, but you use chords.

Me: "Well that's what they're there for,"

Friend: "As far as I'm concerned, anyone that uses chords is just lazy."

Which has left me puzzled. I was always taught that chords were there to be used, but my friend thinks differently. I've heard one of his songs and it's all just notes on themselves.

Does anyone here have an opinion on this?

P.S. I'm still using chords btw. In fact I think he just wants Slash or something lol.

  12. Hi,

I'm wondering where I can find free software that allows you to create artifical drum sounds etc.

I can play guitar, but until I can find a band, I'm left on my own demoing songs, and a lot of them sound very incomplete without some form of beat going on.

    Anyone?

  13. Hi,

This might seem quite strange, but I actually prefer listening to someone with really bratty vocals than an absolutely brilliant, hitting-all-the-notes perfect singer.

If the music is good but the singer isn't brilliant, but he has a unique voice, does it matter?

I am of course referring to my voice, I have no shame to admit.

I'll openly admit that I can't hit every note, but I can hold a harmony, and I've been told I have a unique voice.

So, essentially what I'm asking is what matters more? The voice or the music and lyrics?
