  1. I didn't make it up exactly: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?...MNGUOAE36I1.DTL (article is a bit older, but anyway) With games around 50 bucks apiece, and the average gamer being close to 30 (!) and supposedly affluent, not some kid without money and a carstealing drughabit (violent youth crime has gone down as much as games sales have gone up - no coincidence IMO) - it's an entirely new ballgame. Music makers will go where the money is. With subsidiaries I mean they will be relegated to 2nd tier. Just a little shift in the pecking-order of the slogan 'Play the game, see the movie, buy the cd, read the book (remember those?)'
  2. I'm a bit surprised noone chimes in here, and even though we discussed it at length in the shoutbox last night, I'll repeat - use your ears, primarily, but also check out an acceptable pre-amp.
  3. This guy is my new hero, all done with blender - he also made the music for it BTW. This shows what you can do, with a bit of time and imagination: http://www.vimeo.com/1461657?pg=embed&sec=1461657
  4. Ultimately I think the music and movie industry will become subsidiaries for the gaming industry. It's already bigger than both, and you see LOTS of musicians and ex-musicians taking the sound-designer/fx producer/soundtrack creator route. Dave Menta, Junkie XL, Mike Patton - all into doing something quite different on the side, all game or movie stuff - on a regular basis.

    Screaming

Yeah, he wasn't particularly good - but he made a few valid points. Be careful with your voice BTW - if you want to keep using it. I think Mike Patton had a pretty good live mike technique after a while. Here's a live recording from Phoenix in '97 where he really shows how you make a gruff sound without having to worry about the next gig (or the higher song parts coming next), he alternates his breathing or something: [edit] Oh, nearly forgot: this little plugin is for changing pitch of what your mic picks up - most people use it for chipmunk effect, but try turning it DOWN. Instant lion roar possibilities without stretching the old vocal chords that bad... http://www.download.com/Funny-Voice/3000-2...4-10068701.html

Thanks! It's a purdy good guitar, should bring it to a lutier though, needs some minor work on the frets and I think the electronics could do with some new cabling, replace one potmeter and maybe toss in some shielding while I'm at it. Thing is I can't play it then.. meh.
  7. Allright, allright. No need to shout...
  8. It's cool Where did you shoot it?
  9. We must ofcourse always lean our classics, in this case Alfred Hitchcock - this site has a few real eye-openers: http://www.borgus.com/think/hitch.htm
  10. One thing that always works nice is the fake defocus effect, to create the illusion of depth. With this technique you can have total control over all the 'atmosphere' details in your video. For the best reintegration back into video I think you want to use Photoshop Elements, but I think it should also be possible with gimp, albeit a bit clumsier probably. Will post a little tutorial for both programs.

Here's my old Yamaha RGZ Custom. pic was made in haste when I just got it a year ago, should make some nicer ones...
  12. Yes, like I said if you want to publish the song, you'll have to think twice. But as an excercise that never sees a CD, it should be OK - I'll check the Soundclick.com rules as well, they have a whole covers section with covers online. http://www.soundclick.com/solutioncenter/d...t.cfm?subOf=134 So you should send them a letter basically, but if you *only* put up a streaming version (no download), there is no actual cost involved, as I read it. Anyway, the midi arrangement and recording I made for the backing track was done afresh, so that should not be any problem, for karaoke purposes. People can pm me, and I can send them the links to the tracks (with and without tune, for practice purposes).
  13. Sure, I'll make one so you can give it a shot. Should have one later today or so.
  14. Well, they are pretty gruesome (if its for youtube etc), and remember you will need to find either pictures or actors, so I'd work the other way around, see if you can find useful material first...
  15. Hmmm I like that Don't Panic, that's always been on my list to cover at one time or another. Hmm. We could do a Cover Contest -I could whip up a backing track (a few different versions even) for vocalists without too muc trouble... Dunno how that would work out with copyrights etc, but it could be fun
  16. Thanks, everyone - glad you like it so far I used Adobe Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements - and there's a few tricks you can do with that combination that aren't even used here, and that's really the bees knees if you don't have all the high-end stuff - there is a special inbetween format that allows for some awesome fx editing.... will make a special tutorial on that one...
  17. Here's the demo version I showed to John earlier, it's *very* rudimentary, and has very little to no FX, and Premiere isn't very good at them - but has a few of the basic ideas http://roflcopter.eu/dump/awakenplayer2.html
  18. Yeah it's a cool program - you could play around for hours and hours with it. It's still very 'beta' too, so I hope they add tons of more goodies. Also check out the animation tool made by that Frenchman - it takes some fiddling, but it works fine.
  19. Hi, I put up the first versions of the video tutorials, will need a bit more work and then transfer them to the Songstuff pages properly: First one is *very* basic and shows how to make a kind of picture gallery to go with a music clip. http://roflcopter.eu/cms/index.php?Clips:Tutorials:One Second one is about capturing the screen, for use in other programs, or making tutorials. http://roflcopter.eu/cms/index.php?Clips:Tutorials:Two Hope you find them useful, comments welcome.
  20. Well it's all pretty silly, but it's not for nothing sf movies have always been directors favourites - you can fake just about everything. If I were to redo The Ten Commandments for this, I'd have to rethink my budget.
  21. Nice and simple CGI FX... maybe one of the nicest recently. Will post others as I find them. http://blog.wired.com/music/2008/07/video-...rator.html#more
  22. Our little alien visitor/eye in the sky WIP version:
  23. Here's a pretty simple sketch (I can't draw, and have pretty awesomely bad handwriting when it's just private doodling ) The storyline is pretty simple and weird, so you can do whatever you like, really - about some extradimensional visitor/tourist with superpowers looking like a cross between the Eye in the Sky and some real alien. He arrives via fiery portal and all and hops about the solar system, playing a bit of mayhem everywhere, until he gets knocked out by a sattelite by accident (poetic justice) and goes down in flames to earth and makes some massive explosion. Pretty ridiculous storywise, but I hope to make it look a bit good, at least. (pics are in rough order here, and is frankly not really strict due to its nature, or lack of real linear story).
  24. Here's a brief link list with dowloads for a couple of very good and free or cheap programs for video and video/sound editing Editors: VirtualDub: (free) http://www.virtualdub.org/ Audacity (sound): (free) http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ Sequencers (this one should be in your XP service pack 2 and later, but if for some reason it's not:) Windows Movie Maker (free for Windows users) http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...oviemaker2.mspx t@b/Zweistein Video editor (free) http://www.zs4.net/ For the more demanding projects: Adobe Premiere/Photoshop Elements Bundle (not free) http://www.adobe.com/products/psprelements/ or alternatively: Sony Vegas (not free) http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/products/vegasfamily.asp 3D animation programs Blender (free) http://www.blender.org/ or alternatively: Caligari Truespace (free) http://www.caligari.com/ Feel free to suggest programs you think are indispensible.
