  1. I am going to be buying a video recorder soon, wondered if you could give me any advice, I was told you where knowledgeable

  2. I just tried this with a lady friend who happened to be over at the time - Here's what we came up with: My dreams are made of papermaché Come help me paint them they seem kinda gray My sheets whisper, please come stay again Though I know water can't hold my weight i'm just glad my world hasn't yet fell apart My bones are all hollow, my heart is pumping air It was I who left, when I wanted to stay I promise you, you're more than a friend Though for many years I kept you at arms length I asked, where does creativity come from? A clever man said, "it's chemicals in your brain" I said, you must be insaine i've got a girl who does it for me Be he replies, "Sir, I don't quite understand" "Science explains all but why do we hold hands?" So I gave him some wisdom for the troubles he'd had "That's when that person you searched for's finally been found" Just two verses - rather impressed with how complex some very simple lyrics became with the cut up technique =]
  3. While I agree reading may be a good way to learn for some I still maintain that the best way to learn is by doing. In the time you read & fully absorb the information in a book you could very easily have written 50 song lyrics for practice. I am not trying to discredit your way of doing things. It certainly has it merits. I would probably only point more seasoned song writers in the direction of reading books. I think while a person is an immature song writer they need to develop their own style and really get a feel for what they personally want to write. I think reading a book where an author may sway them down a certain road that they originally would not have taken is unwise. I believe lyricists should learn on their own and then use the wonderful resources provided above to polish their skills. (For those who posted above, your posts where really fantastic, i'm not trying to step on toes here) -Alex
  4. If you have a laptop - try and record in the backseat of a car. It can be a little tricky at times but it's fun and gives a good sound.
  5. I think writing poetry and writing lyrics is much for a muchness. I don't believe it's something that can be taught, or more precisely - it's better when it comes form someone with a natural aptitude for writing. That is not to say in slight that you cannot learn to be better. We all learn to be better at everything we do. What I am trying to say is that for any poet who has turned their hand to writing song lyrics; fear not. So long as you let your heart away with you, your lyrics will be good enough for me. Lyrics are something that should (though cannot always) come from a place where you understand a feeling because you have experienced it before or can imagine what it's like. I think thinking too much can destroy the soul of what something has. I believe that the rough edges of a lyric can sometimes make it unique. It allows that persons character to shine through and let's us peer into their world, soul. Once the first lyric has been molded... The rest will surely follow. - Alex
  6. I tune totally by ear, i remember what the notes sound like
  7. Everybody misses you

  8. Taylor are nice but for playability I think Martins are better (I'm also very fond of Cort guitars and Tokai) - If you're going to get an acoustic, I'd probably attempt to push you in the direction of an electro acoustic... They don't really cost a whole lot more (Sometimes maybe less?) and the advantage is obvious, when you record with it you can use a microphone + the onboard pickup and really capture the tone of the guitar. As for what make... going back to your original question, don't buy a guitar based on it's name. Ignore it completely. Just play the guitars in the store and eventually you'll find one you resonate with. That's the guitar you want. Have a good day!

  13. Knowledge talks, Wisdom listens... Particularly musically
  14. Michael Manring - Selene This song soudns so full of life. One bass guitar, genius mid song tuning? Amazing melody? Amazing mood? Possibly one of the greatest bass guitarists of all time in my humble opinion... Maybe some wouldn't class this as a solo because it's not... "shredding", but damn, it's one guy and it's one bass, doesnt' get any more solo than that!

I cans ee form your lyrics you arent' the type of person to give up, it's a real pleasure to read your stuff, keep writing!

  19. Never be afraid of what other people will think. You should always listen to what people say, but you should never be worried about it. Each lyric you write should reflect part of your persona life experience.

When you read someones lyrics it's like taking a look inside their lives, you can learn a lot. I don't know what you've been through but I can see from your lyrics ...
