  1. I use Linux all the time - for what it's good at: running servers. I tried running Linux for several other purposes through the years, and found out that I spent more time hacking than being creative. Opensource desktop software just isn't mature enough, and will probably never be. Tellsigns are: weird/unfinished user interfaces, frequent crashes, non-existing user support and frequently a nose-down attitude when you try suggesting or pointing out issues. Developers often think they are the salt of the earth and Linux developers are often the most self-righteous, snottynosed, arrogant bastards of them all. I know, I've been working with them for over 10 years.

If you want to be creative and not have the software get in the way: don't choose Linux.

PS: to be fair, most developers are very nice ;) ...

  2. Welcome, Iain. Actually, I have in the later years transited to fingers/nails only since I get a more delicate attack then - however, sometimes I revert to pick as needed. No need to be fanatical about it :) ...

  3. I would suggest reading as much as possible and different genres. Songwriting is 99% inspiration and 1% technique (at least for me). Focus on inspiration and technique will naturally follow.

PS for new readers: This is a hopefully not quite dead horse I keep beating on. I see my job here on the forum to, now and then, kick people out of the technique cul-de-sac and into the fields of inspiration.

  4. I use Salesforce for all my business contacts now. You can ask for a free developer license which will allows you to hold 20M of data - which will be plenty. With some easy customization you can have full control over all your contacts and leads. www.salesforce.com

  5. Hm - I know this is late in the game, but since it is difficult to pick any one item that is the key to success (rather, I would say how you use ALL these services in combination is the key) - maybe the questioning should be what is most/least important and score them all - not just one? Or not :D ...

  6. ... or ... you could do what I do ... sing the damned thing and listen to how it sounds. If it sounds crappy - change it. Repeat until goodstuff.

What I'm trying to say people: don't get too hooked up in methods and techniques - just use your ears!
