  1. What about crafting your emotions into a form, after they originally come from you?
  2. Hey John -- yeah, I think that's a really good way of looking at it. You also then have to consider a further perspective...
  3. Do you subscribe to the idea that the verses of your song should be very specific and detail oriented, while the choruses are more general? I've always thought that was a great and organized way to write and I've heard it taught this way many times. On the other hand, I've heard Springsteen say he approaches things the opposite of this. What do you think?
  4. I just heard about the Little Big Town cover of Lady Gaga -- I need to check that out!
  5. Yeah, definitely... it is a good one though!
  6. Are these instrumentals or songs with words? Interesting... Were you using a refrain, then?
  7. When writing a song, do you prefer writing a song with a chorus, (like an ABABCB format) or one without a chorus that uses a refrain (like an AABA song)? I find myself typically writing choruses, but I think it's good to change things up when you write. Helps you grow as a writer
  8. Yeah, good call on Johnny Cash. That was pretty cool, and definitely a fitting style for that song. And regarding always thinking the original is better --I think that's just because we tend to like what we hear first. It becomes the norm, so it comes off as better.
  9. Haha, nice. That's interesting that you got to see the cover you wanted and it didn't live up to the hype!
  10. Awesome. Do you have a particular song in mind you'd like to see her do? One that she hasn't done already?
  11. If you could hear any artist covering any song, who would you pick to play what... and why? I don't even have a solid answer for this myself except to say I'd love to hear two totally different styles juxtaposed. That's why I always loved Marilyn Manson's version of Sweet Dreams.
  12. Yeah, recording what you come up with is definitely key. And the sooner you act on it, the better in most cases!
  13. Thanks. I think that could come off as sounding strange as it's SO different from the norm... but who knows. Do you have an example of what you mean, with a song link? If they were quick bridges, maybe it could work.
  14. Yes, Pat's stuff is great! Thanks for posting
  15. Also, just practicing melody writing every day will help. Just hum melodies to street signs and store names and things like that. It'll help you break your melodies free from your chord progressions.
  16. Start easy by trying to have the melody do the opposite of what the chords do. If the chords go up, melody goes down. If the chords are strummed fast, the melody is drawn own. That may help you pull the two apart and move on to other ideas pretty quickly.
  17. I write the melody first, because a lot of times I find if you write lyrics first your melody can become wordy. Especially if you don't write out every line to a singable rhythm. I find it's easier to come up with catchy melody and then figure out how to get the words in afterwards good call
  18. I'm curious what your thoughts on Lithium are, in regards to this list?
