  1. While I can't really help you with the topic, I would suggest coming up with 5 or so questions that people could answer. This may help in knowing what it is exactly you're looking for. For example, I could talk about how the lyrics during that time-frame were less politically motivated as say the late 60's and 70's, but is that the kind of thing you're looking for? Good luck with the podcast.

  2. I voted. I had to vote "to a degree" for numbers one and two. I don't think they've lost their passion as much as they have been "re-directed" due to the internet and smartphones. One, it's a distraction and takes attention and focus away from what they want to do (same goes for people in general.) While technology has advanced so much everyone and anyone can actually write music, which is a good thing, I can't say it's all 100% positive. Used to be, you had to have the passion to get a song made. You almost felt "special" because you were doing something not everyone can do. Now, anyone can do it so it's kind of lost it's luster. "Eh', anyone can do that now" type of attitude.

The other thing, while great as they are, the multitude of plug-ins and other things you can search for and use leads people to look for a better sound, more efficient work process, etc... and spend time on finding that stuff, more-so than just focusing on the one, most single important thing ... the song itself.

    Just my 2-cents.

It be me . . . again. :)  I like what you've done with the place, John.  Kudos.

What's up Dave! It's been a while. I'd been wondering how you've been doing. I feel like we're getting the old grumpy group band back together again. When do we start touring??

  4. Valerie - Ceramic Animals

Saw these guys with the Black Keys this summer. Had never heard of them but they were really good live. This particular song I found interesting as it's relatively new, but the "valerie" chorus section is musically a note for note duplicate of a song I wrote many years ago.

  5. My answer is NO. I think the main thing that held me back was reality. 1) I'm old trying to get into a young persons game. 2) There are millions of songs to go up against. 3) The main one, not enough time and devotion. I rarely have/had time to work on songs let alone all the time it takes to actively promote it in the proper way/s.

At least those are the reasons I'm sticking with. Not being that great overall would be in the top five if I dug more. :)

    Hey Randy

Sounding promising! Have you had much in the way of thoughts for what comes next? A full band arrangement? It has a post-punk sound that could go in a few directions. Instantly it gives me a kind of foo fighters vibe.

    Cheers

    John

Thanks John. That's a yes on the full band arrangement. The guitar parts I played are a combo of some bass parts and guitar parts. You're spot on with the post-punk. I'm going with a relatively heavy New Order influence but a little more on the "rock-y" side.

Oh, I'm glad you couldn't tell! The most obvious spot to me is the phrase "that I would grow to find another love" and there are some other minor spots, but I guess there is a lot of room for flexibility in the vocal part so it doesn't need to be exactly on beat. You should have heard it last night before I fixed the piano part! Ha.

I think the song lends itself to some straying vocals here and there. 👍

Here's one I'm working on called "This Ain't It," but I didn't use a metronome when I originally recorded it because I wasn't sure what tempo to have yet, but then it turned out to be a problem because I tried to fix little spots and then the timing got all weird. It snowballed into way more work than it should have been, and there are still some spots where the timing of the vocals is a little wacky, but I wanted to share it anyway as a work in progress.

Funny, I didn't notice any spots that seemed out of place. I'm glad you skipped the "and" in the "I know what Love is and this ain't it" It sings great. Great song and superb vocals.

  9. Rough as hell but happy to be doing it. Here’s an homage to the 80s song I’ve had in my head for a while. Feels good to finally flesh it out a little outside of my head.

Falling In Love With You (Back in the Day)

    Back in the day,
    When we first met.
    Hanging out at the mall,
    I’ll never forget it.

    You were coming down,
    I was growing up.
I found a penny on the ground,
Went to pick it up for luck.

    You gave me a smile,
    Then went on your way.
I left the penny on the ground,
But I fell in love that day.

    Can’t you see I’ve fallen?
Travel to Timbuktu I’d do anything for you. (You know I love Oliver!)
There’s no way I could say that I’ve ever been this fallen,
    In love.

    Falling in love with you.

  10. Folk-Funk! I dig it. This works really well as it is. Similar to MPs song, only thoughts are to get rid of a few extraneous words to let the words flow smoother. An an example in the opening line:

It seems extraordinary we should have no fear

It seems extraordinary to have no fear

But knowing this is a WIP, whether with getting rid of a few words, or just practicing the performance, those things tend to get smoothed out during the process. Loved the dynamite guitar playing. It makes me want to grab the guitar and give it a shot!

    Funk-On!

  11. I had to go back and edit my post as I came to that same conclusion. I reworded it but honestly I'm not as convinced about that second change I offered as I am the first.

Honestly, just doing that one first critique brought a rush of happy musical thoughts I hadn't had in a few years. Thank you for that. Maybe, just maybe, I got carried away! :)

  12. Looked at lyrics again since those were the edits you were looking for and got another one.

This line sounds smoother as: High heels and thighs disappeared up under her skirt.

EDIT: I believe that changes the meaning to potentially mean the high heals disappear.

Maybe: High heels with thighs disappearing up under her skirt.

  13. I think so. I got that it was a song about a song someone wrote. But what is the song he wrote about? I did figure your song was mentioning a song someone wrote but I did assume it was about a girl named Emily. Especially in the third verse where I also took it as Emily, after hearing the song, felt better about herself.

  14. Haven't heard a scratch vocal like that from you since Paperdoll Girl. :) Has the makings of a good one. I know it's rough still. Only thought, or suggestion, is to consider ways to say the same thing but a little smoother in a spot or two. Example being in the last line of the first verse: Coming off of "That wasn't how he saw her," ... "he just knew she" is slightly clunkier than "but he knew she." Just rolls off the tongue a little easier and makes it easier for you, the singer, to get those words out.  I've had to do this several times and it's helped me with my quite a bit. In that example I even would have written, or sung it, "Buddy knew she" just to help me get it down pat.

Great to hear from you. Can't wait to get back to it at some point.

    Great work.

I remember when they came out.

In my region, they were "new" and no one knew what to make of them -- in a good way. I think when folks look back from now they don't "get" hearing them and others the first time among whatever else was played, on FM Radio at that time. Again, in my region, -- can't know your experience.

(And no "MTV" unless you had cable, and, -- what's cable? I didn't own a "Stereo" :)

I distinctly remember someone asking for someone to check the Strobe on the Turntable, -- was it off pitch and another saying, "oh, no, it's supposed to sound that way"... -- interesting. Well to me it is.

-- Well, great sound, good for you!

Thanks Patchez. I didn't know who they were until this album I guess and to me it is interesting that while I really like them, I had no clue they were on this particular album until I found it again years later. I recall at a grade-school fair/picnic when I was young there was a balloon and dart game. I can't remember exactly what you had to do to win (i.e. how many popped balloons) but I came home with 5 albums that day and ABBAs greatest hits was one of them. For some reason I always thought that was the first time I really listened to them. Oh well, I guess my memory has always been pretty hazy. :) Thanks again for the comments. Much appreciated.

Well I was hoping for Dancing Queen ;), but sounds great! Especially loved the air-raid siren!? hahah

Thanks Cody. Somehow Dancing Queen still is my favorite. It's amazing I'm not sick of it. Yeah, the siren just felt appropriate considering the topic and all. Thanks again!

  17. Quick backstory, the short version. There was an album I used to listen to when I was around 10 that I truly loved. I have thought of that album many, many times over the years but couldn’t remember the name of it, only remembering a few songs on it. About 2 months ago I found it on Youtube and to my surprise, it includes a few groups that I consider my biggest musical influences but I had not clue that they were on that album. I only remembered a few of the disco ones. So Cheap Trick was the biggest surprise but the next one, ABBA, was also on there and they are a major influence as well. So on that note I created this ABBA cover in honor of them, the album and just music in general. Here’s the link to the actual album from 1979 on YouTube. Starflight 1979

FYI - I'm posting Soundcloud and YouTube versions so I can hear the difference.
