  1. The Real Book has been the defacto standard around here since it first came out. Same with Chicago and Denver. I know because I used to frequent those places. The thing is when you have singers they tend to be prima donna's and will only sing tunes in keys they feel comfortable with. When I was playing in Florida with the Bobby Cole trio He had his own books. He was a hack imho. Most of the songs were no where near key or proper chord changes. They were all "easy piano" songbooks. But he didn't share even the publishers name. I had to pretty much learn how he played the songs by watching his left hand. I wished I could have recorded his sets to transcribe for myself. There is something so lyrical and bouncy about BK's playing.
  2. I love Jimmie Vaughan often I think his brothers fame may have been why his own talent wasn't as recognized. Also of all the Signature Stratocasters on the market, his is my favorite. anyway.. Fever - Peggy Lee
  3. trust me, I was in a quiet rage today. I went back for my paycheck later and I was told my paperwork had not been processed. The waitresses supported me. But there was no win in the fight. I had spent some money on new clothes to dress appropriately (most places supply chef coats) It may turn out that I lost more then I made. I won't know for a week to be sure. They've lied about everything else so far I wouldn't be surprised if they lied about my rate of pay as well.
  4. Well that was short lived. They only really wanted a cook so that one of their other cooks could go on vacation. Today that cook returned and I was let go.
  5. When I was playing in jazz bands early on they would be constantly seeing if I could cut the mustard. Songs would be played both in faster tempo's and in different keys. Sometimes they would play it songs in different time signatures as well. To them it was separating the wheat from the chaff. To me they were simply a bunch of old jerks. Truth of the matter is all of those same people had to go through the trial by fire process and it was some sort of "right of passage" To earn your spot on the stage.
  6. Have to watch out for which real book you get. Some are for Bb Instruments. At least the band agrees on "The Real Book" as a single source. You wouldn't believe the variance in notation from one book to another. In jazz it's common to transpose songs sometimes changing key by surprize live in the moment to accommodate some prima donna. (I knew one sax player who would only play in C) Depending on the size of the band you can reduce chords. If you are working with a keyboard player or 3 piece horn section it's preferred that you do. Stick to comping 6th/7th chords and forget the extensions.
  7. I'm still working at SZ and I have my new job cooking. If I'm frugal and things go on track I might be able to buy myself this very nice christmas gift.
  8. I've taught guitar before. Competition is tough. The first students go to the teachers with the highest seniority. And if you aren't into a particular style (heavy metal) you then it's harder to get students. Overall I liked teaching to supplement my income. Another problem I have now is... Transportation. Even if I maintained both jobs for an extended period of time it still wouldn't be enough to support a car. It's still early on cooking after my first week. I know that things can change month by month. My next few weeks will be low hours. I'm told it's a seasonal drop off. I'm not bothered by it for the short term. If however time reveals something different I'll have to augment my income with another hourly job.
  9. Paul McCartney. So simple and straightforward. Chuck Rainey Leland Sklar
  10. Thanks Steve. And now the good news. I just got done with a job interview. I start on Tuesday!!! It's not a fortune but enough that I can live within my means.
  11. So here's the update. There is a problem with our ecommerce system for where I currently work. That may be the sign that the doors are finally closed or it may be a glitch which is too expensive to fix. Every month for the last few years I've been sitting in a holding position that this may be the last. Well.... I've got my invoice in for the last month and haven't seen payment (it goes from the 20th to the 20th) So I could be out cold without money. My boss has always been good to me over the last 11 years so I'm hoping he'll honor it and the time I've worked since submission. Also... I have an interview tonite at a coney island. It's not far from me and I'm really really hoping that they'll hire me full time. Wish me luck I really need it. Mike
  12. It's still a great little amp. Though I confess I no longer spend endless hours tweaking tones with the editor. I've yet to touch my Roland Cube since getting the THR-C
  13. It's nice to have a guy working on the audio and midi in windows 10 who has experience with music production and performance. The new midi and audio API's look very promising. I also like the way he addresses usb in regards to midi and midi in general.
  14. It's done, I'm running 10. I did give into a few privacy / security things including the advertising. I recall seeing something that stated "install anyway" shortly after I checked my email and there was the notification... One thing I don't think John Q Public understands about MS cloud distribution is that it uses your computer for storage and distribution of it's software. I also don't think MS was aware of how fast it could roll out win 10 could be distributed via this peer to peer method. Which is why they opted for reserving your version then waiting... http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/bitwise/2015/08/windows_10_privacy_problems_here_s_how_bad_they_are_and_how_to_plug_them.2.html I downloaded and installed win 10 in the late to early hours (2.am to 11 am) locally on a tuesday. Most people keep their computers running 14/7 though may not access them during that time. Re drivers. Yeah I learned the truth about driver fixer apps and trying to keep up with drivers years back. Driver inspector fixer tools are a scam. Codecs / decodec are the things that can make your life miserable (especially video) Vid and audio codecs get thrown out the window first on new installs cause microsoft can't maintain them all My Window 10 machine doesn't have any music production software on it. It does have a few programs that I'll have to clear the registry and re register. No big deal, those programs are from my software company. It takes less then 5 minutes to clear all the software titles and get fresh keys for ten programs.
  15. well I've tried to download win10 three times over the last day. Fail, fail, fail. I'm starting to think maybe it's not a good idea even after I go through all the security hoops.
  16. Yep, I made the switch to mixcraft awhile back after comparing various other daws.
  17. Nice Article Rudi.
  18. Best of luck in your pursuits, Rudi.
  19. Hi John, Not offended and not a slur, Without songwriters there would be no songs to sing (or play)
  20. @ Rudi The more I think of jazz standards that I've done before the longer the list grows. In group settings I've played literally hundreds possibly even 1000's of jazz standards. As a soloist fingerstyle guitarist I've played all of the above but more as a learning experience such as learning to write my own arrangements for guitar/ztar. I've already added 10 more songs to the list after posting. The thing now is to remember them all and play them in sets and or clean up my weak areas. @ John. Singer-Songwriter? I'm neither. Occasionally I've dabble in writing instrumentals. Nonetheless your post has great merit. When I was in a Blues-Rock band we'd always start off with an uptempo song to catch the crowds attention then wind it down a bit and finish the set with a crowd pleaser always leaving them wanting more. Prior to that when I was doing pop/folk rock in a duet we'd set up covers as "three-fers" Three songs by the same artist before moving on to another artist. At times I could have been a "tribute artist" as I'd have huge libraries of songs under my belt. I have not treated my voice kindly over the years nor my lungs. Heck three songs singing and playing and I'm toast. Over the last hmmm 15 years I've gone down so many roads musically it isn't even funny. Always searching for the next thing. As soon as I was either adequate or adequately frustrated that no matter how hard I tried it wasn't going to happen I'd move on again. A few weeks ago I started playing standard pop/rock songs. Many I'd played before and some were new. It was all too easy and...I kept on saying to myself I'm never going to get myself in another cover band. Jazz fingerstyle has always been just the right middle ground. It's always challenging enough that I feel satisfied when I can pull it off and yet not so challenging that I'm not banging my head against the wall (classical, heavy metal)
  21. In recent years I've gotten away from set lists. Generally I'll work out a few songs at a time and by the time I'm either sufficiently pleased with my performance or have simply given up the ghost in frustration. I simply move onto another new song to learn. I want a setlist and am trying to figure out how to calculate how big it should be. Here's what I've got so far: 1. Summer Time 2. Polka Dots and Moon Beams 3. How High The Moon 4. Body and Soul 5. They Can't Take That Away From Me 6. Sugar 7. Autumn Leaves 8. Long Ago and Far Away 9. It's Only a Paper Moon 10. Sweet Loraine 11. Witchcraft 12. Darn That Dream 13. There Will Never Be Another You 14. One Note Samba 15. Summer Samba 16. St Thomas 17. Stormy Weather 18. Shadow of Your Smile 19. Lullaby of Birdland 20. Wave 21. Don't Get Around Much Anymore 22. Dream a Little Dream Of Me 23. Waltz for Debbie Of note regardomg these songs... Due to fingerstyle performance They are only two to two and a half minutes long at most. At minimum that's only 46 minutes back to back. I want a nice full 2 hours
  22. Quicksilver Messenger Service - What About Me
  23. That was last year. The bar closed. Right now I'm scraping by. On the positive side I can no longer afford cigarettes so I'm going through serious withdrawal.
