Try here first of course for a bit of constructive crit:

:)

You can also get yourself a whole load of blank CDs and start burning and sending them off to the music press-make sure you send one to songstuff too!:)

Gaining reviews is probably one the the hardest things to get-the main point to remember though is to get your EP out to as many people as you possibly can, and include a good, well written press release along with it.

Some helpful hints and advice on writing a good press release can be found here:

heya thanks for the advice!

honestly tho, i'm not looking for honest critique, not to sound full of myself or anything.

we arent interested in just having random people critique the EP just for the sake of critque.

no, we have done that before. we're interested in promoting our CD in some publication of some sort.. be it online or whatever.

hope it makes sense.

Hey

Just to be clear, exactly who do you want to review the EP? Columnists/reviewers at major publications? Some invite only critique similar to the critique forums?

Are you wanting reviews on the work in progress (ie you would still consider altering the songs/recordings, based on feedback, pre-release) or as finished work?

If the former then critique and promo are firmly different things.

If the latter then getting reviews can be part of promotion, though not always the best form. Still, they can be very useful.

On the promo approach...

Contact your local press, local music papers, local radio etc. Ask them what they would need from you., how they like materials submitted, and don't be afraid to try and find out if there are ways they can help you. There are several reasons:

local boys tend to be more supportive of local emerging acts

they tend to be more desperate for interesting content

helps build local fans, and a local buzz. that can be built upon

you can build a local presence more easily. breadth as well as depth.

regional and national news, music press do read local press. that is one place where they begin to pick up who is hot and who is not

it generates press clippings, which is very handy for your press pack (the information you send out as part of your promo, when you contact labels, even to help get gigs)

It's also a great way to multiply the volume of photos you have. Every paper that covers you is likely to send a photographer. Most will let you have the photos, and many will let you use them with suitable credits.

You can accomplish a lot in a short time.

Next, look at specialist radio stations, online ones too. Pick the actual reviewers who you believe would give a beneficial review.... remember critique is only really useful to promo if it is generally positive. If you are looking for reviews regardless of positive or negative then that speaks more towards your lack of confidence in your material... not something you want to be presenting to the press or public unless you are a cute 16... even then it often backfires.

If Songstuff can help we will. Mentioning your release in our newsletters, on the site blog etc.

Cheers

John

Hey John!

Glad to read your comments.

basically i'm trying to spread the word about the new EP.

trying to get as many places such as this community to review my EP and if possible post it on the actual site.

aside from that we're also looking into local news papers and other local publications.

Thanks for the break down on how to submit to other publications etc, knew it beofre and you just made it more concrete for me.

Want to create some sort of buzz before we throw together a CD release party, hopefuly in march.
