seagull guitars

They're okay. They were the first acoustic guitar where the fact it was made out of cedar was deliberately marketed. I guess they're well-made, they sound okay, and they play nice.

At the "Moograss" Bluegrass Festival (Tillamook, OR), they have traditionally raffled off a Seagull guitar donated by the local music store; proceeds (like profits from everything at the Festival) go to the local high school music program. The way they promote the raffle is to have varioyus performers on the agenda at the Festival play the guitar between bands. So they did let me play it once. (I basically told 'em, "Me not virtuoso. This will show you the guitar can still sound good played by the likes of me.")

If I'd won the guitar (I did buy a ticket, once), I'd have kept it. Like I said, well-made, sounds good, plays well. I never have been hidebound to brand names, so that's all that I'm concerned about.

That help?

Joe

I own one, can't play it, but have heard it played and it sounded nice in someone elses hands. Made in Canada aren't they? I've often wondered if the Bad Co. song Seagull off their Bad Co. album was about that brand of guitar.

Send it to me Tom, I'll see if it's any good...

I have a Cedar S6 - the top is unvarnished and easier to dink than butter! It has a nice sound, a wide neck without too much camber that's quite thin to grip - I think the cedar tops suit finger style playing more than strumming - my old spruce top Yamaha had more sustain and really rocked. The neck and frets has lasted well so far. It's well made and was good value for money - I tried a lot of guitars before buying it and frankly, I felt I'd have to pay almost double the price to get the next best sounding guitar I found (a Martin) - this was about 8-9 years ago. It's always stayed in tune very well. I'm looking for another guitar myself - this time with a spruce top. I'll take a look at the Takamines but they can be a bit pricey, not sure what else to consider at the moment.
