Rhyme? Or Not..

Recommended Posts

we all differ in the way we write, I don`t rhyme much, but its not a bad thing. take them as you see the write your doing.whats working. I thought this would make a good topic. I have a friend share a little with me, I`ll share it here, made alot of sense to me. [What you have imperfect rhymes] thats me!...lol

[my friend]

I am a connoisseur of rhymes!!! (no secret here) They are my passion and hobby and did I mention my passion, BUT BUT BUT I fully realize that some of the great songs out there have minimal rhymes while there are others that are fully loaded with rhymes. Both identical rhymes and soft rhymes play their part in the right setting/genre.

I can think of a hit by Toni Braxton "Unbreak My Heart" written by Dianne Warren whose Chorus has not one rhyme in it and it shines. Infact if you look at the verses they are very shy on rhymes and yet the song became a big hit.

Let's study the lyric....

"Unbreak My Heart"

Don't leave me in all this pain

Don't leave me out in the rain

Come back and bring back my smile

Come and take these tears away

I need your arms to hold me now

The nights are so unkind

Bring back those nights when I held you beside me

1-Un-break my heart

Say you'll love me again

Un-do this hurt you caused

When you walked out the door

And walked outta my life

Un-cry these tears

I cried so many nights

Un-break my heart, my heart

Take back that sad word good-bye

Bring back the joy to my life

Don't leave me here with these tears

Come and kiss this pain away

I can't forget the day you left

Time is so unkind

And life is so cruel without you here beside me

(Repeat 1)

Ohh, oh

Don't leave me in all this pain

Don't leave me out in the rain

Bring back the nights when I held you beside me

(Rpt 1)

Un-break my

Un-break my heart, oh baby

Come back and say you love me

Un-break my heart

Sweet darlin'

Without you I just can't go on

Can't go on

The song had a great melody and emotion and went to no#1 but it's rhymes are very sparse, i.e. pain and rain

NOW... let's look at another hit with endless rhymes throughout the lyric:

"Yesterday"

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away

Now it looks as though they're here to stay

Oh, I believe in yesterday

Suddenly I'm not half the man I used to be

There's a shadow hanging over me

Oh, yesterday came suddenly

Why she had to go I don't know,

she wouldn't say

I said something wrong

Now I long for yesterday

Yesterday love was such an easy game to play

Now I need a place to hide away

Oh, I believe in yesterday

Why’d she have to go?I don't know,

she wouldn't say

I said something wrong

Now I long for yesterday

Yesterday love was such an easy game to play

Now I need a place to hide away

Oh, I believe in yesterday

A rhyming summation of the rhyming conversation

One song with little rhymes

One song with alot

But what they have in common

Is the number one spot

Look at the song in total

Especially melody

For therein lies the treasure
