Hey! I'm trying to be more consistent with putting time into song writing and finnishing songs so i figured I wold post here in a public journal to keep track of my progress

My main Objectives are too :

  • Put more focused energy/time into writing and recording songs consistently
  • Finnish more songs and not leave them hanging
  • Complete

to do this:

·         I will put forth two hours of isolated concrete concentrated energy into writing songs for my upcoming EP every day until DEC 20th.

·         I will focus my energy into recording twice a week on Tuesdays on Thursdays for a minimum of an hour.at a time

My aim is to complete one song all the way through every week, but i am very slow at this so my goal will evolve and adjust as my journey goes.

I am going to do at least 10 songs by Dec 20th. I

I will update this here daily to give an idea of where I am and what progress I made that day.

Hey, it is a great idea, but why not create a Blog on Songstuff? It's an ideal way to manage a journals plus the blogs get quite a lot of readers. Just a thought. Of course you can still promote your posts on the forums. :)

Thanks John, I look into it.

Day 1

Completed two hours? : Sort of.

Slow start, I am not sure wether or not to count looking for instrumentals as time spent writing. I have a song I am working on with 3 verses done and a

with no hook or music to it. I spent half the time looking for a suitable instrumental and then gave up and started working on making my own which transitioned into a completely different beat with a different mood which i layed the the skeleton for. Not sure if I should count this as time as my goal is to "write" 2 hours everyday.... I will work it out  I guess.

Writing music is writing. It is no less and no more than lyrics writing. In fact if you only produce music it is an instrumental, if you only produce lyrics it is lyrics writing. To qualify as songwriting it has to include both processes. If you are a lyricist with no music skills then you need to collaborate with a music writer to produce the finished work: a song.

The reason is that a song is more than adding lyrics to music or vice versa. When you add the two together the two parts work together to become something much, much stronger. Sure in some genres music is less important, or in others the lyrics are less important, but in both cases the combination is still vital for the overall effect, the overall connection between writer, artist and listener.

So in my opinion working on the music and working to combine words and music into a song, on your own or with a collaboration partner, is absolutely vital.

I write music and lyrics, but when I said "song writing" I thought that meant lyrics only. I like to use free instrumentals I find around the place, there are some real gems around the internet. My production skills are not amazing so I use other producer's stuff while I work on it.

For this particular song, my workflow was a bit different, cause I wrote it while listening over another artist, but I don't want to cover their song, so I ended up looking for music to add after I already wrote 3 verses.

DAY 2

2hours: Yes

Recorded:Yes

improvisation: Yes

I a verse of a song I finished earlier this year today. Not too happy with it, I want to get it done by the end of next week. Also, today I attempted to make an instrumental to the lyrics I had wrote previously but I got inspired and took the beat to another direction again lol. I will have to try and keep the vision tomorow and either find an instrumental or make a beat that suits the mood of what I already have.
