Why Don't I Like The Sound Of The Piano Anymore?

Hey guys,

I used to absolutely love the sound of the piano.  When I started writing songs on it a year ago and played it every day in a piano class in our high school (mostly just noodling around) I started to not like the sound of it anymore.  I remember thinking when I was writing a song that I liked how the song sounded, but I didn't like how the actual piano I was using sounded and that it would sound a lot better using a really nice one.  The problem was that I would listen to a song with a really nice piano but still not like the actual sound of the piano anymore.  Do I need to take a break or have I ruined the piano for myself?

Thanks guys

Another side note, whenever I'm listening to songs I always want to change parts of it, like the chord progression, the melodies, etc.  I'm sure it's like this for a lot of other musicians, but how do I make myself just enjoy what the artists have written and appreciate them for what they are instead of thinking how unoriginal a chord progression is or how I'd like to change the melody, etc.

Thanks again

Take any piano piece to a MIDI keyboard, and change the voice to Orch-Stab, then Metal-Guit, then Jews-Harp, then Pan-Pipes. and listen to these all through with the new sounds.

Do this with a different piano piece every day for a week, and you will fall in love with the piano all over again.

If you enjoy a song and want to learn it, you can always add your own interpretation to the melody.  Many great covers have been tweaked from the original song, no one is going to come looking for you just because you added your own melody line!  Follow your instincts

Hi W

Perhaps its time to move on to another instrument to broaden your horizons. I play alittle bit of everything just enough to get by when I write and record a song. Playing different instruments broadens your ability to compose and arrange. I write most of my songs on guitar but have written a couple as well on keyboards.

Playing songs keyboard wise can be different if you go from say a rock organ sound to a light moody ambient strings sound. This might set about a different way in composing as a guitar player may try something acoustic instead of electric or dabble with a 12 string guitar or even bass guitar.

As far as listening to songs you like and wanting to change certain aspects to improve upon them isnt a too far fetched idea..but then again you cant copy something that would ardently be plagiarizing and identifiable to where people are screaming bloody murder. I mean, you can replicate a genre as far as sound and structure is concerned, but you could never totally feel it was your composition or song if you were blatantly borrowing melodically that isnt yours....unless your a rap star...chuckle chuckle

So, in closing, get a drum machine, guitar, bass and try composing and arranging with those other instruments once you feel comfortable playing them.

just my two cents worth
