Hi I am in my early 50's and I thought I would start learning to write music 

I play abit of guitar and piano very little and can hum a tune 

but I will need direction

I was wondering where do I start?

Not knowing specifically what your interests are. Maybe good to just start checking out the different sub-forums. Get familiar with the community.  Tutorials, articles, blogs, Lyrics and song areas where folks are working on their ideas and interacting with others and their ideas. Music lounge and discussions. Just jump in.
