It's Okay to Be Upset

Recommended Posts

it’s okay to be upset when the oil tank is empty
we are all born empty and just accumulate stuff
collecting cobwebs on our ageing tongues
we either flourish or we malnourish
the ‘inbetween’ is a fictional romance written by a horror writer
we are either starving or have enlarged abdomens
we feed ourselves lies but still go hungry
most of us leave earth with our ink ribbons half-used
the only thing a skeleton mourns is wasted time
the right hemisphere tricks the left hemisphere
we fall asleep but never truly reset ourselves
we dance with death and leave life alone at the bar

it’s okay to be upset when the windows are broken
we are all born broken and just accumulate scratches
act like little clay pigeons for others
dilute ourselves until our original colour has vanished
our faces become too popular in the drug stores
an extra minute in bed for every month of our lives
the voices of teenagers get louder and louder
desaturated eyeballs and the unrelenting desire to moan
pedestrians with sore heels and jealousy toward drivers
banishing our spirits directly into our livers
faces with no noses due to overwhelming spite

it’s okay to be upset when the wheels stop moving
we are all moving and accumulating dust
we wipe ourselves down, throw up and pretend to smile
some of us numb ourselves with stress and cough medicine
we are story machines that succumb to the elements
they take our limbs and cogs and fuse them to another
every mayday has a pay-day
the vines slowly hide our faces in the morning light
newspapers that repeat the same stories in varying lengths
we remember the smell of the christmas tree as a kid
darkness can only consume you if you invite it over for dinner
never invite darkness over for dinner

Hi D,

You certainly have a lot to say. So many lines and thoughts. I don't know how I noticed but you put the word accumulate in the second line of all of these. cool!

this is a simple concept but has such a powerful meaning. like wow. this is the realities of life summed up in one poem.

this is my favorite part.

i love the imagery of the first line. it's this slightly unsavory image that kind of makes you open your eyes to the subject of the narrative. it's intriguing. and the last line i can personally relate to! being a horror writer myself, romance doesn't usually come off as all lollipops and gumdrops.

great job, i'd love to read more ❤️
