Production - Making it better

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I call myself new to production. In the past, I'd record, mix, and publish all through Audacity, because it was easy to use. Sort of. As a result, everything I did has sounded, sketchy.

Along with the realisation I have too many other priorities for my hard earned, comes the understanding I should be doing more myself to make the songs I write more presentable. Hence, I stepped onto the Production roadtrain. To say there is a lot to learn is a vast understatement, right up there along side, "the universe is large!"

I invested in an upgrade to my hitherto unused Mixcraft 6 DAW to Mixcraft 8 Pro Studio and all it can offer, and a shit ton of reading.

What I am asking for here, is just some feedback to how my "learning" is translating into my production.

I do not have a "good" singing voice, but I am trying to remedy that with practice and yet more learning. I don't expect to sing like a pro, but there are plenty of pros with what would probably be considered ordinary voices, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Neil Young, to name a few. All I am looking for at this stage is "okay". But being involved, I don't know how I am doing.

I have links below to me singing my songs. The first couple are older, the last two are the song I am currently working on.

Can I please have some indication as to whether I am "improving", trying too hard, or some such place in the journey.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Kel,

A couple of the links have no songs available.  I can't really compare but I have a couple of thoughts.

You are alittle pitchy at times and it throws your song off for the listener.  Maybe some ear-training and breathing and vocal exercises would be of some help. I've mentioned your topic to @Mahesh. Mahesh instructs on vocals and is putting together video vocal courses for Songstuff that you might want to take a look out when they are released.

Lots of us have to work and train on breath support, mental anticipation of the notes in creating the "head" space and good practice habits.

:)
