Self Publishing

Hi all,

Does anyone know about self publishing? I know I can do it through my PRO, BMI. I also know there are companies out there that will do all the scut work, making sure all royalties are collected from all markets, and they either charge a set fee, or a percentage a lot lower than the 50% from publishers.

Has anyone had any experience with this? Do you know any of these companies? does anyone know about self publishing when co-writers have different PRO's?

Nothing relating to the music industry, but human nature being what it is I would suspect it may be much like self pub for novelists, with many very helpful people out there waiting to stick a hand in your pocket.

I will try and post up later however, BMI, ASCAP etc are collection agencies. They distribute to artists and publishers. When self publishing in some countries you need to register as an individual and publisher. Others it is simply a check box.

 

Collection wise that is all you need. They have working agreements with societies in other countries.

 

Where you might use other Companies would be:

 

publishers as sub publishers
song pitchers

sync specialists

music libraries

 

another possibility is doing an administration deal with a publisher.

Hi, and thanks all for the help, and the links. John came up with the phrase I was seaching my mind for and couldn't find, "Admin. Deal". I undersand some publishers do this for people who would rather go that way. After reading through a # of sites like this one, simple easy explanation: https://blog.songtrust.com/music-publishing-deals ,

I think we're going to try for the co-publishing deal with one of the bigger publishing companies. It looks like the better of the of the options. The admin deal looks like a lot of work for the songwriter who would have to do all the contacting/pitching/advertising etc. on their own, using time that might be better spent writing songs.

I sent all the info to Simon, and I will leave it up to him to choose.

I looked into it quite a bit, and until and unless I get a name publisher to do some of mine, I'll wait on it. I'm approaching some radio stations around Knoxville to play some of my original music, both country, and Christian.  I plan to do it the old fashioned way, go in with CD WAV files and beg... One of them, at least, has nationwide stations.

 

We'll never agree on Biden, I am still praying he doesn't get in. And masks, only when I have to, or for other peoples peace of mind LOL!
