How should I reach out to this music producer?

Recommended Posts

I have a few concrete ideas for some songs that I want to make. They are already written, I just have to record and make a really rough outline for how I want them to sound. I'm not a producer, so I can't really do any better than just accompany my vocals with guitar or piano. Because of this, I want to reach out to a producer who makes stuff that I absolutely love. I have his email, and I want to work with him so bad, but I do not know how to approach this email or reaching out in general. I don't know what to say. I don't even know what to put as the subject of the email. I am fairly new to making music and I've never done this before. How can I get him to want to work with me? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Hi Sam,

Welcome to Songstuff!

A few quick questions that will help clarify your situation:

Have you previously recorded and released any songs?

Do you know this person to speak to if you met in real life?

Are you familiar with their previous work?

Are they a traditional producer, working with many artists to help them record the artist’s music and create “a sound”? Or are they a more modern home studio musician who mainly records their own music? Or would they be considered a “beat maker”?

Would you be looking to co-write with this person or hire them as an employee to do a job?

Have you thought about how you would compensate this person? (Up front payment, royalty share, no payment…)

I ask because your answers have an effect upon how you would approach them.

Cheers

John

Your questions are giving me ideas for zine content.  Producer Pitch - This is the age of selfie videos. Everybody and their great grannies have ideas.  Producers are busy people, they might watch you on their phone if you’re lucky and somebody they trust sends the link to them. Good quality sound and video production will get their attention more than the other artists. Even if you're both beating garbage cans. Show you are committed and experienced, not just an idea. If you look good or dress great that helps too, even if you aren't on stage.
