VST instruments are becoming more and more popular since they can reproduce almost any synth / real instrument at a fraction of the cost. Having a steinway for $99 can't be bad, but if you check out the prices of digital pianos and compare the sound quality; there's no comparison.

If you find a plugin but don't want to pay the dosh, then search for it on ebay; it's a 90% bet it will be there!

Another great site to listen to some VST demos. These guys invented VST. The column on the left has lots of different types of instruments to preview

I know I said this like a zillion times before, but all of the free Computer Music VST instruments are really good, and best of all: FREE!! (just the price of the mag).

That said, Native Instruments makes the best ones, but you can also find a lot of free ones at KVR.

Hari, there are so many I guess I want to get recommendations for VSTs you guys have actually used, and what you think is so good about those specific VSTs. Thanks for the link anyway.

Free ones:

I use the ARP2600 simulation & Rebirth. get them @ KVR

I use Cheeze Machine for long sustaining chords, also I use a lot the Delay Lama it's a lot of fun!

A couple that I use loads are Triangle 2 which is a great sounding mono synth, lots of knobs to experement with and loads of presets too.

The MinimogueVA is a free emulation of the classic Mini Moog, great for sharp leads and fat basses, you can also use it polyphonicaly, which is nice for big brass/string pads.

For the classic mellotron sound, I use Tapeworm.

Also this for a Moog Taurus emulator.

A few not so free ones are Native instruments B4 Hammond organ emmulator which is just so cool it hurts.

And the Korg Legacy Collection. I find sounds to suit most tracks so easily with this package.

at twice the price of DFH, what do you think makes it that much better? Is it a stand alone deal or do you need DFH to run it?

u can get the ezdrummer dfh expansion ... it using all the dfh sample ...
