Sitting To Play

Recommended Posts

When you sit & play, do you balance the guitar on your right or left knee (assuming you right handed that is)? If on the right knee, do you have trouble accessing the upper register?

I think most of us use the right knee, but playing beyond the 9th fret is easier if you use the left knee.

Curiously, If I play my Classical guitar, I use the left knee, If I play my steel string accoustic or my electric, I use the right knee! I think it may have something to do with the neck being much wider on the classical and I can reach around easier in this position!

Both - depends what I am playing.

Some things I find easier to play because of the different angle that I hold the guitar when it is on my left leg and the different angle of my left wrist. I find it less of a strain with some barres and stretches to have the guitar on my left leg

I usually don't. I use a strap. If I have to sing, I'll stand--better projection of the voice. If I'm just playing, I'd just as soon set down. Only time I do the Knee Thing is if I'm playing a guitar without a strap--then I'll stand, prop my right leg on the chair, and balance the guitar that way. But it gets uncomfortable pretty quick.
