Cheap Electric Guitar?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I play accoustic guitar at the moment and thinking of getting Electric guitar to record some up beat songs. I can tell you that they are not cheap! Especially the Ibanez and Ashton series. Do you have a suggestion of a cheap quality guitar for recording purposes. I am not a pro, so I'm not going to spend more than $350 for Guitar and amp if I can.

At the moment I'm looking at this one on ebay. Looks crap, but should I go for it?

Any input will be greatly appreciated! :D

You'll need an input to plug it in! :)

Seriously!

The quality of these guitars is fairly basic. They are being made in China and turned out at an astonishing rate. You'll find it to be pretty functional. If you do buy one. Get a new set of strings on it imediately. That will make some difference. If your budget is tight, I'd say go for it! I recently bought a cheap Cinese Bass guitar form ebay for 50 quid (Aus $120) It plays OK, and is more than adequate for my needs.

For value for money, these sort of kits seem impossible to beat. There is a risk factor buying anything unseen, but I have not seen / heard any horror stories .

I paid rather more for my bass, & I bought it in a shop, but it was still made & assembled in China. Astonishingly, the set up was perfect straight out of the box. That is something you cannot reasonably expect though. Since you play guitar already, you hopefully will be able to identify obvious set-up problems & correct them yourself (action, fine tuning etc). To pay for a pro set up could prove expensive.

I bought a Squire Strat copy and 15 watt Marshall amp and it's been fine. I bought it from a local shop in York and it was decently set up with a decent action etc

My son played it until he bought an Ibanez Jem and you can see and hear it being played on Youtube - there is a solo at 2:11 which suggests one can bash out a few tunes on it.

Tremolo set up isn't fantastic but i think that is reasonably typical of cheap guitars.

From memory the pack was something like £150 ish
