To Be Free

(for Tim Masters)

Nine years served

for a crime you did not commit.

What would it feel like?

Would you feel cheated?

Vindicated? Simply happy?

Perhaps happy to be free, but still

in utter disbelief as you step from the

marble courthouse into the cold sunshine?

Would it feel like the Twilight Zone

with your disbelief literally

following you out the door?

I’ll bet you would you think it was

all a dream that followed a nightmare

and fearing that at any minute

you’d wake up in your cell.

Maybe you’ll live your life

fearing sleep, afraid to wake.

What kind of freedom, to live

the rest of your life in fear that

you’d wake from the dream?

In some ways we are very different

but in others much the same. I

like you am a prisoner of my past

and could wake any minute.

Interesting piece, Kenny. I hadn't heard of Tim Masters and so didn't really connect to the poem, though I loved the last verse. Then I googled Tim Masters, and having verified who he was, I reread it and it had meaning. Nice job.

It would be a nightmare, wouldn't it?

Yes it would be a nightmare, one many people have had I think so think this could be a significant poem. Not that I think it is yet, I do think it needs some work, need more, but I think it can be a good one.

Thanks for looking and commenting.
