Nashville is my home

It seems strange that I never dared to dream that Nashville would be my home. Yet, here I am living just north of it and driving in to see it's unmistakable skyline every weekday! I'm HERE!!!

I have to tell anyone who wants to be in the music business, that yes being in Nashville is better for your career. I have not yet set all my music goals into motion and have already gotten networking connections without even trying.

I will always consider Nashville my home from now on. I have no where else I'd rather be. :D

You are right. If you want to make it in the music business then you have to be there and make all the contact that you can.

I have been down that road before and enjoyed that ride. I wish you all the luck in the world

Good for you, Lisa! :) 0nce upon a time I daydreamed vaguely about at least visiting there for a wee while. However...

It's not likely to come to fruition. Goals change over the years, especially when one is non-instrument-playing lyricist. ;)

Ahhh, cool, I'm envious! I'd love to go there someday, not to live, but to see it, just to hang out and let the atmosphere of decades of music making sink in. I mean, it's a classic metropol of everything music, who wouldn't wanna go/be there?!!!

I'd love to hear more on it. Keep us posted!

All the best,

Peter

Congratulations!

Thanks Rob, It's kind of bittersweet. I left Florida due to a life changing event for me. So I'm adjusting and everyone keeps calling me brave for just picking up and going. I did some planning but I don't know anyone here so it was pretty big jump. I knew i'd get a day job quickly. So things are in motion. :-)

Well Donna, it just happened I needed to relocate and I decided on this area. All things fell into place well so I'm really looking forward to this time in my life. The words are still pouring out of me so I'm going for it! If you ever get to visit here I'd love to meet up with you! Lisa

Hi ya Peter! Nashville has an amazing amount of country just outside the city. I'm happy to live out in the country close to the city...(oh I think that's my next song title...) I've been to the Opry at the Ryman theater and the timelessness of it made me cry. the main strip is too much to drive on. Next time I have a visitor, I'll go walk it! fun fun fun!

The Nashville of everyone's dreams, alas, was not to be---at least for me, stopping off for r and r on a wacky 1989 Greyhound Bus trip (destination: Tucson, AZ). In those days you could keep your ticket and get off and on and stay overnight anywhere along the route. That led to some adventure, not to mention getting away from the chain-smoking yahoos I was forced to ride with.

We hit Nashville at night, and I was dying to see this legendary burg. But instead of the Opry, Country Hall of Fame or (I'd have settled for) a songwriting hopeful pumping gas the following dark and forgettable tragi-comic episode occurred:

Got off in the center of town. Asked a cabbie about a cheap, safe room.

'You'd better not be stayin' HERE! Guy got shot and killed in the grocery last night'.

I ended up in a Motel 6---with a camera hidden in the shower ceiling, and falling asleep to the Morton Downey, Jr. show---in GREEN---another lovely Motel 6 amenity.

'Nashville Cats'----I hardly knew ye---LITERALLY.

But 'I WILL return----I will return.  I'll come back for the honey and you'...

Hi Joel,

what a crazy ride you had! yeah, the city can be rough here. i almost didn't move here due to the crime rate but i choose a town just outside of town and it's not been too bad.

It's wonderful when things fall into place. ;) And good for you as well, making a move and a brand new start.

I'd recommend that at some point you get in touch with Marc-Alan Barnette. He's a treasure trove of information, and has been living, working, and writing/playing in Nashville for years. Decades, I think. He's also highly entertaining.

Well, if I ever get over that way, I'll be sure to give you fair warning. Would be fun to meet up. ;) In fact, as I'm a TAXI member, I've occasionally toyed with the idea of going to one of their annual Rallies. They're said to be fantastic. Hasn't panned out though so far. Delft is a long way from Nashville.

Mind you, this was '89!

I do know one person there: singer Annie Sellick. Does that name ring a bell? She's a good singer who was smart to base herself as probably Nashville's only jazz singer.

Smart is when you zag when everyone else zigs...

no, I don't recognize her name. I've not been able to do the rounds. the day job pay was barely enough to pay rent for a while... things are looking better though. Prayers being answered. I'll look her up! Thanks!

Here are some old saying that was being said to us in the 80s when I was in Nashville from capital producers and others that I was  around.

1.Watch who you walk on on the way up because you never know who will walk on you on the way down.

2. Be kind to everyone that you meet because you really don't know who they are.

3. The more you help others the more they help you.

If you are writing song for publishers

When sending your songs in always call and ask if they are looking for new songs.

Get  permission  to send your song to them.

Only submit your best 3 songs and make sure that your best song is frist

Good titles. Sometime they look at the title and if they do not like the title they will not listen to the songs.

Good luck to all

Hey Samuel, great advice! You really were in the thick of it if you were getting this advice.

I figure I am a nice person and have no intention of walking on anyone. But I notice when I'm walked on and have a good memory.

I always try to have good titles/hooks.

One thing that's not on your list that I do all the time is have recordings and lyrics with me at all times because (like you say above) You never know who you're talking to.

I see on Reverb you have a show tonight? Hope you knock em dead! Also sent a friend request on Facebook. :-)
