  1. Who knows, they might capture one of these parrots and sell it. We could have parrots with asprin overdose issues. Thin blood, stuff like that.......right?
  2. I predict things will have changed....ok, I'm covering myself against future ridicule.
  3. I had an uncle that was similar to that too. Rudi I'm still trying to get the parrot joke. It isn't you I'm sure...It's me trying to get it. I know another joke about asprin .You may or may not have heard it. There was a lady in the city boarding a city bus and she had a handful of asprins. After boarding the bus she accidentally dropped them on the bus floor...she got really frustrated and started to scream " My ASPRINS MY ASPRINS!!! The bus driver jumped out of his seat trying to comfort her and said, " Lady if it burns that bad, I'll grab some water and try to put it out".
  4. I figured it might be nice to have a place where being silly isn't frowned upon.:) Things seem to be kinda serious in some of the other areas. Yes I have contributed to that in some cases. So it might be nice to be unserious sometimes too Just sayin' So if you have a joke to tell lets hear it. The only time I get laughs is usually by accident, but hey, they're still laughs right? I know the moderation is kinda loose here, but I would hope that we can attempt to keep it fairly clean since we could have anyone on the boards. So lets hear your jokes or attempts at jokes...or not.....or....whatever
  5. Thanks Tom. I seem to do a lot of things that meander. The vox was the melody, but it was really bad. Imagine me trying to sings two steps higher than I'm capable of lol! I think this shows your early abilities in composition. If it's a clinker it's not really a bad clinker. You had the structure down. It is a shame those 4 tracks weren't very good but it was either the 4 track ot nothing. You're a good acoustic guy who also does well with the computer stuff. If you don't think it has any future, maybe it would be a good candidate for something to use a few things from? Frankly I'm surprised that there are as many people willing to post their junk. I have a few that you probably couldn't pay me to post FWIW none of these really are that bad and some are quite good. Some of these things have taken hours to play with. I have taken a whole day on something and threw it away. I'm pretty sure my recording chops are getting rusty now since I've gone whole hog into learning the fiddle. I can't seem to change gears when I'm doing something...so recording and composing has taken to the back burner these last 6 months.......but.......I hope to present a decent fiddle part soon! Good work on those clunkers!! I'll look at another of my hard drives and see if I can post another one and still be seen in public.
  6. You're hearing the harmonic distortion from the circuitry in the interface.Harmonic distortion is the noise the headphone amp circuitry makes. It's always there but you don't notice it as much at lower volumes. The source recording should be loud enough that you never need to turn up your volume more than 3/4. All prosumer gear has this problem and the best way to avoid it is to use gain staging during the recording process. The cheapest preamps will have more noise than the better gear.
  7. Tom I almost cried listening to that last one and I don't even follow the St Louis Rams....almost seems way too nice for a sports song . I'll try posting one. I was looking around and found this on my HD from March...it had vocals and i didn't like them so I left them out. It needs some more work. If it wasn't for this thread I would have probably forgotten it. I played it all in my small studio one day in March percussion and all. I didn't like it and had shelved it. Since coming back to it, I think I'll work on it some more.
  8. Disclaimer- I don't claim to base this on anything but an attempted educated hunch. Though I am convinced much of it will happen, I'm not sure when it will happen. I believe there are things that exist that are being hidden and these will be revealed in the future...I'm guessing in 20 years or less. The general population will find out we have robotoids, clones and synthetic humans, that places like Dulce base have been tampering with human genetics for decades and that we have had these lab grown humans with us as clones for years. The program has been so convincing that it is happening right under our noses. You might have passed one of these creations on the street and not known it. This was the whole reason behind cattle mutilations. An egg is aquired and the DNA is removed. New DNA from the host is added. The egg is grown in a lab using parts from the bovines. This makes a lab human, but it isn't totally human. It will be revealed that we have had antigravity aircraft and interplanetary bases for years and that nasa is a cover. These technologies were transferred by Germans who claimed to have communicated with other beings ( check out the Vril). The "force" in Star Wars is likely based on the Vril. These technologies came to the states from Germans who came here after WW2. The beginnings of all of this are heavily occult based. Some elements of the black Nazi SS have been inside of our secret programs ever since and carried their projects with them. Only the "elite" have access to any of this. The rest of us use oil to get around and that's how they want to keep it. Many don't realize that even our older generations of cloaked bombers use some form of anti gravity tech in the wings. These events could all be part of an elaborate hoax to eventually make us think we are being invaded by aliens....if Hollywood sci fi films are an indication we are being conditioned to accept this. I'm not really sure how all of this will come into play, but I think we're building up to something. We have holographic technology now that is far above anything you could imagine. We can generate almost anything holographic in the sky and make it look real. It wouldn't take much to dupe the public...a few synthetic humans or semi humans made to look like aliens along with anti gravity craft and there you have your invasion. So I believe that things are going to get really weird in the future. Things are much weirder than we know even now. I predict the fall of the USA. Not a total fall, but we'll be like a 3rd world country after we're invaded. Only a shell of what it once was. This might be 20 years out or more...or maybe less. Our own leaders are making sure we do ourselves in. There will be food shortages and riots. Some targeted groups and people will be captured and led to places where they will be confined and killed. Just like Nazi germany only worse than that. There will be a further effort toward a consolidation and control of world resources by the "elites". The world government will control all agriculture through large corporate entities. There will be some kind of a mandatory chip program. If you don't take the chip you won't be able to buy anything. The other problem is that when they chip you it gives them control of you. The chip itself is a control device. People who don't take the chip will be shipped off and eliminated. Incidently the new Obamacare program that was passed gives the government the right to chip you. It's in the fine print. Many of the things that have happened within the last 10 years have been staged to bring about these changes. 9-11 was one of them.
  9. A wonderful example of a 1+1 done well. If this is your bad your good must be really good.
  10. This might be like eating an elephant...one bite at a time. Since we mostly link to other sites here I think you could put a few up at a time. It isn't really my call though. This is John's site. I don't think this is an epic fail IMO. You did a lot with just a fourtrack. The tune is well played and sung! It has a dated feel to it but that's a given.....not a bad thing. If this is a fail it's a nice fail You played a large part in the creation of this so I think it's a good contender.I love the concept of this and It makes me want to do something similar with my old photos. I think this would make a wonderful idea to refine musically a bit more. Did you do anything to attempt to help the song "make it"? I just wonder why you felt it had no value or didn't make it. Hi Gry, Well it certainly sounds as if there are possibilities. I guess at some point we decide that a thing isn't worth further effort, but we keep it around just in case we might want to work with it later. You have the structure down on it pretty well and some nice vocal work there. Maybe walking away from things for awhile and coming back can bring some new life to it? Take care!
  11. I wish I could listen now but I'm not at my studio computer. I'll check these out as soon as I can. It will be interesting to hear what you think doesn't make it, or didn't make it. Technically nothing I've made has "made it" in terms of marketing, because I haven't tried..... I have bits and pieces of things that might have some potential. I'm willing to share some of that here maybe it it isn't too bad I was thinking more about the kinds of things that you seen some potential in and they might have started to take shape, but for some reason didn't pass your personal satisfaction, the motive being that maybe someone else might like it or see another angle to it that could help it to finally take some kind of shape. Maybe it's a chorus with a great hook, maybe it's a lyric or a riff???
  12. I thought it might be fun to dig around on the hard drive and post some of the music that you kept but either didn't finish or didn't think was ready yet. What do you think?
  13. Hi Prometheus, I can't get around the fact that I'm a bit biased. My opinions are not totally seen through clear lenses. It's good to read others opinions on it. I think Steve is correct. This could be an endless discussion. Kind of similar to Mac..vs PC or Fender .vs Les Paul I see your point. My focus was more on HOW it was achieved and not as much what comes out the other end. The engineer is probably more crucial than the actual software. There is some difference in audio engines between software types and there have been endless discussions on that. Coming at this with my colored lenses and in my opinion user interface is very important, but this could also become a very opinionated discussion because what I think is a great user interface might not sit well with you. My software allows a high level of adaptation and customization and I can save anything with mix recall. To me this is a big plus since I can adapt it to my particular needs. Reaper has something similar but not as developed. Does that matter to most users? Probably not. I think Reaper is one of the best values out there, especially for anyone who is just starting out. No point in wasting money if it doesn't need to be spent. But as I said before, the more in depth Reaper user might eventually come up against a wall of limitation and this is the only reason I encouraged getting a deeper program right off the bat. This is only my opinion. A user who has basic needs probably won't ever need anything else. In my case Sonar Platinum is offering free lifetime updates for only 99.00 for vested users. The cost is more for a new user, so I'm not so sure I would want to spend a much higher amount if I were new and looking at new software. I never need to spend another penny on software updates for life. This deal is only good through August. The implications of this might mean that at some point in the near future I will have spent less on Sonar than a similar user of Reaper. Even if a new user has to shell out more money, it's a one time expense. I would agree that Reaper attracts the geeks :). If you like it why change? No reason to really.
  14. Presonus and Focusrite make great prosumer hardware. Congrats on the new Mac!
  15. scotsman89 you have such a great outlook on life and music. Of course, the music does counter act much of the supposedly bad things that we musicians go through, or else we wouldn't do it. In some cases our music is our expression of it. The position has some baggage that comes along with it. I think some of that baggage is part of being or attempting to be creative. I believe an accurate description gets very complicated from here because no two people are alike. Some personality studies done indicate common threads in so called creative people. If you were to search traits of creative people I'm sure you will come across a lot of info on it. We as a group tend to me more introspective and less social. We tend to be inclined to mood cycles or swings. I can only speak for myself and others I see around me who I know. I'm sure there are exceptions and many people are experts at masking the real self. I believe much of this is genetic. I need to constantly work to hold myself in a positive frame of mind. Optimism doesn't come naturally and could be more associated with the realist world view. I think what I see in the world gives little reason for throwing a party, in fact, most of the world is a big facade. The only real things are usually rejected in lieu of the fake things. This isn't to say I can't experience pockets of happiness. I'm not the least proud that this is the way I am, but this is how I am and I accept and deal with it. I have learned how to cope the best I can. Much of the time I'm a pretend optimist. I find that if I force myself to try and see things in the best light I feel better, at least for a little while. Given the choice I would be in a personal space somewhere attentive to something I like...much like the plastering example you gave. I can't handle too much social interaction and prefer more time alone. I don't hate or dislike people, it's just how I am. I think it has already been said that art is many times borne of struggle. Some of the best songs come from a tragedy. Sadness trumps happiness. In order to be an eternal optimist I think one must engineer their thinking to avoid the pitfalls of negativity. This would likely involve the idea that " ignorance is bliss". On the other hand the melancholic pessimist needs to learn to stop and smell the roses along the way. I rely on a higher power to strengthen me. I have long ago realized that my efforts are futile. I admire those with such a bright outlook, especially those who come by it naturally. I sure don't intend on this to go the direction of a pity party...wah boo hoo hoo lol! I hope I'm in the minority on this. I really do. I want to see people who are so happy we can't hold them down!!
  16. I'm not going to lie to you...I have more low days than up days. I simply cover it well. I think I might have picked up on that as I see it myself frequently. In the end I think it's what is in us to do what we do and let the chips fall where they will. For what it's worth, you have some excellent material posted to Soundcloud....music to be proud of. You didn't buy plays, you did it because you liked doing it right? In those terms you are a sounding success my friend!! I see pride a long way off, and admittedly maybe this is because I also see it in myself at times. So I don't deal well with those prema donna's either. Thanks for understanding John! Great points all!! What amazing points Rob. You covered a lot of territory I hadn't thought of. The above thought really makes me sit still and ponder.
  17. I once went after free vst plug ins like white on rice. Some of them are pretty good. That Arturia vox looks like a nice setup. I hope these developers with the knack for software design can either work for a larger player or go into business. Some of these guys are just gifted naturals.....take the owner of Melda for instance. I don't know how he developes new products one after the other and continues to update them regularly. He has to be one busy guy. In his case the plug ins are good and he has some very unique plugs, especially if you wanted to mix electronic music. I had a few free plug ins lock my old computer up and this scared me away from some of the unknown hobbyist makers. I don't have many free plug ins on my most recent computer. Mostly tried and true well known makers. I don't think there's a huge market for a small developer. Small operations are looking for free or really low cost. I've seem some of those plug in makers post a paypal link and ask for donations. Not sure how that's working. Many daw software companies are crowding the plug market out by offering darned good plugs in their flagship programs so the user doesn't really need to look for anything. An EQ with good filters, a compressor, a decent multi band compressor and a limiter will be all many will ever want or need for the mix. A good selection of reverbs helps too. One of my favorites is Valhala room .One of the best IMO. Anything from them is good. I also love a convolution with a bunch of impulses.
  18. I remember when I looked at YT and salivated. It seemed the company to take Kontakt out of business, but it wasn't to be. YT ended up going the way of the gigasampler. Now I'm so glad I stayed away from it, because as you say, support wasn't very good. Like so many other good ideas that had potential but wasn't developed into what it could be. I didn't know YT was bought by Majix. I've run into the same frustration concerning purchased DAW plug-ins. They usually aren't cross compatible. On one hand I can understand the company's protective nature. Cakewalk just developed a few higher quality mastering plug-ins, a dynamic EQ and a really good multiband compressor. You know if the plug ins weren't proprietary, they would be on the web at some p2p site for free. Same goes for Studio One. I can't use those plug-ins in Sonar. Cakewalk has had a fairly lax download scheme. You can use their software on more than one computer. They had a lot of hacks just like Cubase and several others. Older versions showed up for free on the web so they went to a different system. The DAW market is so small anyhow, these guys need all the help they can get. A .vst is such a small program. I'm sure a person who knows how can strip away the part of the code that ties the plug in to a certain DAW. People are probably doing it. I never needed to do that because I had all I needed and the rest were purchased 3rd party and could run in anything. Most of the larger software companies have gone to a software control panel to purchase and upgrade . Every program has a user user indetifier and can only be bought through them. These control panels probably can also look at the code to see if it has been compromised, much like Microsoft does when you want to get free upgrades. The one bright spot in this is loops and samples. Most programs are now cross compatible with acid and REX loops. Magix I'm not so sure, I think they are pretty self contained.
  19. Not sure if it's ok to link to other threads on the subject. If not please delete. This thread has a link in it to the info and additional comments on the subject. http://forum.cakewalk.com/Magix-Buys-Sony-Creative-Software-m3422177.aspx
  20. You are right John. I'm sorry I jumped to conclusions. It all worked out since I trimmed the original a bit. I think you mean you feel no inclination to inclinate when it comes to being a musician. I have a feeling.....no that didn't come out right. I have an inclination that this may be temporary.
  21. I gotta hand it to you in being able to stick with a thought for a long period of time. My mind switches gears if I take too long getting the feel out. I realize this is not the best way to work. It's better to do it the way you do it. Sometimes I'll take the day off and spend the entire day trying to flesh something out..this has had mixed results. Usually if I feel I must get something out my creativity peters out. I literally get grumpy if I can't get some time working on my music. This works like a medicine for me. My schedule is so busy that I grab the time when I can which is usually in the evenings. This afternoon I wrote a song and recorded it. I sang lyrics I was given to work with . It's about 90% there IMHO. I'll probably submit it for a look over. I played a picnic today on guitar, came home thinking I would just chill out with a movie and ended up recording a song...go figure. Kudos for being involved with the kids and being a den leader. Some things are more important than our musical pursuits. My kids are grown and I am admittedly kind of a loner at heart, so I don't mind holing up and working a song for a long time in one stint. But if the project takes longer than a few days it usually fizzles out. I hope you get the chance you want. I guess I'm older now, but I don't really think this is why I have deviated from the rock forms of music. I think my brain just got tired of those slamming beats and screechy guitar and I needed something more reflective. Drum programming can become really tiring on the ears after awhile. Getting the amp settings right on my electric guitars can bring on a migraine headache lol. I have an old ESP rock bass and I really dig it, but tracking it usually results in me using keys bass because it takes a lot to get it right. No one can take this away from you. I mean, if you want to play car hubcaps for drums you can, it's all up to you and I also like this freedom. You need thick skin to defy norms and not really care what anyone else thinks about it. I love that you can do this. Usually when this happens to me it's the result of listening to someone else's music. I'm attending more to my song playing and construction when making the music, so I have a tough time letting it carry me like that. There seems to be a constant struggle to be better with time, yet put something out there now that seems ok. When I go back to older songs I do a face palm many times. It seemed ok at the time....goes to show our standards change . It's good you have this struggle since it assures you will continue to improve. Rudi I answered this at length but one of the mods must have deleted because they didn't think it applied. Mod- If you deleted my post I would at least appreciate a reason why you decided to do it, thanks.
  22. Glad you're making headway there. The system is usable now? Speaking of bass...just had a friend say to me, " Hey I have this thing in my truck and I thought maybe you could use it", so I went I to his truck and looked at it. It's one of those Alpine subwoofer cabinets. I think it must have the amp in it. Very heavy , even for a bass speaker. This is one of those things that will shake the screws loose in your car if you pump it up.....I have no idea what I'll do with it, thought it might make a decent bass reference monitor. You want it it's yours, but shipping will be high because it's heavy. If you use it your neighbors will hate you forever.:)
  23. You were quite involved with the products I see. I started using Sony Acid back when it was owned by Soundforge.I upgraded to the Acid Pro 7 version. Right about that time there was a big uproar because acid was sliding into oblivion. Some of the complaints were, bugs not fixed, not 64 bit and wouldn't load into Win7 properly. Sony seems to have made a weak effort to console its user base in making it compatible with win7 which was probably a necessity to keep the product on the shelf. I still have that version on my older Win 7 computer and it works well for what it does. One of the easiest looping DAWs out there IMO. A person could make some really convincing songs in it because many of the drum and bass loops were very well done. I wanted to keep it around because I occasionally use loops...very occasionally lately. I'm happy that someone bought it and might be using/upgrading the code. FWIW Acid pro 7 was a lot more than just looping software as you might know. It had everything one would need to record audio and master, even had some of Sony's sought after efx included. I'm guessing Magix got a good deal on the purchase since Sony had basically let it atrophy and didn't seem to care about their daw division. Yeah, the daw market is a small pie for sure. Cakewalk has some kind of "announcement" the first of the month. Samplitude is a really nice progam. Majix has some good things going for them. Magix seems to be two things...a good upper echelon of products and a passable lower end which is fine for many basic users. They already had loops made for majix, so I'm also wondering why they bought it. Might give them an edge if they can advertise that they have cutting edge DJ improvements thanks to Acid...time will tell, but these seem to be strange bedfellows.
