    Guitar Music

Bert Jansch was always a favourite of mine. I discovered very early that if I learned a John Renbourn tune, I could sound like John Renbourn when I played it. But if I learned a Bert Jansch piece, I could never sound like him, no matter how assiduously I practiced. It’s all in that left hand touch! These are my favourite Bert albums: Birthday Blues Rosemary Lane (unaccompanied) LA Turnaround (country tinged)

    What Guitar?

I had a Fender Strat for 25 Years. I thought I would keep it for ever. It was in sunburst with a maple neck. The string tension was so high I would break into a sweat trying to bend a note. As for vibrato, it was almost impossible. It didn’t make much difference what strings I used or how I adjusted the springs (I removed them in the end). I never got accustomed to the neck. It was too easy to pull the top E right off the fingerboard (doh!) when working quickly (despite the tension). Why did I keep it so long? Like all original single coil pickup Fenders, it sounded superb. However, I have never regretted getting shot of it. If money were no object, I would travel to Spain and spend 2 or 3 months visiting various luthiers and trying out their guitars. I’m sure I would return with something that would make my present (3) acoustics instantly redundant.
  3. Ok Steve wins. And the prize is... You get to show us those Micky Baker chords (on that last guitar of course).
  4. ahhh . I see. My former idea of the flat bed grinder was wrong though. I have since learned that a tiny amount of convex bow should be present on a fingerboard. Your method would likely be ok though as the abrading surface is only in contact with a few frets at a time. Also sheet aluminium is likely to have some flex in it.

    Favorite Lyric

Not sure. Probably ‘Jaquile’ I’ve never posted it up and I’m not sure where to lay my hands on it at present. Here is a bit I can recall. ‘…and do I know? she has a penquin that prefers her to the snow? it told her long ago, in an special look that it has when its adoring her…’
  6. Being essentially lazy I play the same patterns for most scales and just imagine the key changes. I generally play a scale as applied to a piece of music. If I’m doing chromatic passing tones I have to apply it to a specific tune. Occasionally I may put on a CD and play along. Before a gig I try to spend an hour going over the stuff where I have solos. So when I get to play for real I still retain some of those ideas. I play almost every day, if only for a few minutes. Though I often lose track of time and find I’ve spent a couple of hours or so.
  7. I was surprised to see me say I thought I understood, because now I dont. Im talking about Steve's aluminium tool. Does this travel up & down a single fret, or horizontaly across? Any chance of a piccy?

  9. Hi Rich, If you fill out the personal profile form in the bar, that might satisfy Steve (though I doubt it) welcome to SS
  10. I imagine the base scale (28" inches) and the treble scale (25.5" inches) are varied to address the issue of temperament. By using a 'telescoped' scale, you can increase the range of the guitar sunstantially. Here is an link re- temperament http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~oneskull/3.6.04.htm

    Line 6 Variaxe

I wouldn’t even consider it all the while they only offer 22 fret models. Raise the game to 24 frets & I would go try one.
  13. Dunno. For 7 strings you just tune the extra (low) one to B, I cant imagine having a bass G below that somehow. I would be tempted to tune it GCFA#DEBE. The one that I cant get my head around is this... http://conklinguitars.com/bizarregallery/b...vedescript.html
  14. Shes excellent. I wish I had fingernails like that too. Shame about the material though, I find Paganini as dull as ditchwater.

    Behringer

Is that Direct Input? I have about 6 patches that I made for stage work. If you ever want to try any, let me know. Though you have humbucker pickups on your guitar, so that cant help. Is there a user forum for Behringer gear? Might be worth checking. Or what about Danelectro boxes?

Actually, it must be absurdly easy to make your own. A pickup, a pot, a jack input, m/c heads etc. With no frets to worry about, you dont need to build anything too precise. I might fancy having a go. Anybody thing of anything else other than a cigar box for a body?
  21. Wecome from Portsmouth UK Clare. Where are you based?
  22. Not exactly Mark, Ive become accustomed to letting the words flow out & damn the consequences. I have gotten flak about it, both in my personal life and also in here. I am not advocating this to you, but I personally have to work without constraint in order to get the best from my lyrics.
