It doesnt really matter too much. I bought an electric guitar at 16 and wanted to be an electric player. Almost immediately, I met lots of acoustic fingerstyle players. I picked up on that and eventually got an acoustic. For about 10 years I played the acoustic almost exclusively. It was harder work! The acoustic guitar (most are anyway) is physically harder to play and much more difficult technically (Im talking about fingerpicked classical, ragtime, blues, folk etc). At this stage of my life I hardly touch the acoustic. When I got it out of the case 5 years ago It had a nasty split along the back (lack of use and lack of care). I have not had it repaired because it sort of repaired itself, the split is once again invisible and the sound is lush and beautiful. The electric is now what I play (almost exclusively) and enjoy soloing more than anything in the world. I know everyone said to make sure that you are happy with the unplugged sound. I will not take issue with that, but I practice at home with the solid body electric with no amp at all. Have done for years. The only advice I would give is make sure you are happy with the overall sound. Some guitars sound stunning beautiful if gently played but lose their character when played aggressively. Others respond to hard aggressive playing. Make sure you pick the guitar that suits both your ear & your touch.

    Guitar.xls

I recently bought a book, (to help tart up my annual calendar) EXCEL 2000 Power Programming with VBA by John Walkenbach One of the accompanying example worksheets on the CD-ROM is ‘Guitar.xls’ Its brilliant, and genuinely useful. It depicts a 24 fret fingerboard with notes of a scale marked on it at the correct positions. You can change the tuning of the strings to anything you want, and the fretboard display adjusts to show the new finger positions. It has three banks of buttons. The first allows you to select the key you want. A, A# (Bb), C, C# (Db) D, D# (Eb), E, F, F# (Gb), G, G# (Ab). The second allows you to select the Scale/Mode you want. BLUES SCALE DORIAN HARMONIC MINOR LOCRIAN LYDIAN MAJOR MAJOR PENTATONIC MELODIC MINOR MINOR PENATONIC MIXOLYDIAN NATURAL MINOR PHRYGIAN WHOLE TONE There is a SCALES INFO button. When clicked, this displays details about the scale/mode currently shown, and advises on what type of chords it could be applied over. The third is DISPLAY OPTIONS, permitting the choice of either sharps (#) or flats ( on the neck display. An embedded menu allows changing of the fingerboard colour. Brilliant. Wish I could have had something like this when I was a nipper. Forget spreadsheets, Excel was made for this. I got my copy from amazon/bargainbookstores for about £10

  16. Hello from Portsmouth UK Welcome to SS
  17. I, like John, downgraded to a soft case after I bought a 2 seater. I still have the hard case, but it only has a brass plate with my name etched on. I dont think stickers would work very well antway as its a crocodile-type Fender case.
  18. Amanda. your site looks great! I tried to leave you a message but couldnt remember my password (doh!). You list among your dislikes something called ‘converses’. This puzzled me, so I did a search & learned something, but I’m still none the wiser. This is some of the stuff I found: 1/ Philosophers & linguists since Anscombe (1964) argue that ‘before’ & ‘after’ are not converses. 2/ Sony have an interactive talking-robot-dog that is referred to as a converse. 3/ There are some sort of trainer/plimsole shoes called converses. 4/ Tria de les converses filològiques comentades de Pompeu Fabra. (?) 5/ converses [Latin conversus, past particle of convetere, to turn around, see convert] 6/ Or maybe you just don’t like talking? You can see Ive tried. Come on, what is it?

    oooo.... What is it?
  22. I saw Joe Pass at Ronnie Scotts about 30 years ago. Oscar Petersen dropped by, stepped up to the piano and joined him. Joe had his eyes shut. On hearing the piano he half turned his head and nodded to OP. Good jam!
  23. Yes, just about. I have a BF & Flectones album somewhere. Must dig it out for another listen. They certainly are a unique group, by both design & inclination. Bela himself is the only electric banjo player I know of, and the only one to play jazz (other than Dixieland) too. I hadnt realised the drumitar was from 'the future'. Maybe we could fetch some other wierd hybrids from our (garages) future. Now, how about a compressor powered bagpipe-accordian? hmmm...!
