  1. Nice treatment for the idea. Made me smile. I had a rough day today too. -still smiling good job Joe
  2. Fire On The Mountain - Grateful Dead
  3. I have singing problems. I tried finding a teacher. The only one in my general area said she could help me but seemed incapable of agreeing to an appointment or replying to an e-mail inside of a month. I joined a chior. This was pretty good for exercising the voice, but I had to pull out due to practices conflicting with gigs. I bought this http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0470640200/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00 There is a cd with singing exercises in. The author managed to explain all sorts of stuff enabling the voice to 'come from the right place'. This was amazing, I really was able to find correct body resonance. It made me regret not starting this years ago. I have lately neglected the exercises, but still sing in the car using a newly discovered baritone range. Even poor singers improve markedly over time. Fergal Sharkey did. Try and listen to Randy Newman's 1st album 'Something New Under the Sun'. The voice is cringeworthy. Dont give up. Get started.
  4. Just listened to 1st song. Its a peach. Love the energy & feel in there. Will listen further... Great job Mahesh
  5. Hi Marty Nobody's Bar - Bert Jansch http://www.last.fm/music/Bert+Jansch/_/Nobody%27s+Bar
  6. Have I the Right : Honey & the Honeycombs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORrX-6n4N3M (awful song though!)
  7. I collected the band PA a while ago from another band member. He pointed out some damage to the speaker cables. One jackplug was bent to an angle of about 75 degrees at the collar. Another had half of the casing missing. I went to buy some new ones yesterday (at Nevada Music - Farlington). I couldnt find what I was after, so asked a young staffer for help. He could find any at first either. At this point he suggested I buy instrument cables instead. I have interchanged speaker & instrument cables many times, and didnt understand the difference for a v long time. I was surprised that a music shop assistant was glibbly offering duff advice though. We found the right article eventually. caveat emptor !
  8. Do you get the buzz that I do? When you generate surprises?
  9. I sang mixolydian improv over F & D# alternating chords. Should have recorded.....
  10. Well handled! Whats Going On - Marvin Gaye Los Lobos cover- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0M7-lx3vhk4
  11. A majority of songs are chord dependant. Its a characteristic of modern (1950s-60s onward) songs. By this I mean that you dont get the gist of how the song should sound without the accompaniment. Therefore its reasonable to assume that those songs were created with accompaniment (chords, basslines etc). Older songs were created with strong melodies that could be sung unaccompanied. This was deliberate. Remove the accompaniment from modern songs and they are generally the weaker for it. Since this almost never happens, its not significant. The singer in Blown Out (my band) has created songs without accompaniment. They are generally modal and contain blue notes (like a soul song). The time is regular 4/4 or devisible thereof. I have added chords to a couple of them. They have wonderful potential for all kinds of harmonic structure.
  12. I went over Rory Gallagher's 'I Fall Apart' in my mind and sang a new melody to it.The new melody was not complete. It had more blue notes to it and had more of a soul feel. I am without a musical instrument today.
  13. Corazon - Los Lobos (Corazon = Heart in Spanish)
  14. Another year John? Thanks for being there. and Happy birthday man
  15. I only listened to the parts you identified, but heard enough to realise that there is more than one piece of music in there. It best to be clear about what you are asking for. It also sensible to know where to draw the line. I'm happy to help anyone out, but I dont change nappies.
  16. I never thought of it like that, but you are probably right. It doesnt stop anybody re-invigorating it though. It stays in a rut by feeding on itself. If was about 20 years ago that Townsend said 'there are only so many riffs you can come up with'. It never occured to him to abandon riffs, but I suppose he did more than most of us ever will.
  17. Book Of Rules - Bobby & the Midnites

  19. Re-invention is fine and good. It entails integrating a new element. Re-hashing is retrogressive. Its indulgent nostagia gone out of control.
  20. The singer in my band tried out for X-Factor. He sang a couple of songs and asked our opinion. We gave our opinion and wished him luck. He fluffed it and didnt get past the first audition. I have never watched the show. From the little Ive seen looks like it belongs in a Roman Area. They only want fighters with a few unwitting clowns thrown in for contrast. The feller with the lav-brush haircut obvious only wants to perpetuate the same endless stream of ubiquitous s#*t that has throttled the life out of any real creative expression in popular music. Go for it. Good luck.
