  1. I doubt I would notice if rock did die. Yes there are pubs where I that heavy rock types go to hear guitarists. It is all about competition. I hate that sort of atmosphere, its skewed. I have played at one several times in the past. My band played there once. We were definately in the wrong place, they did not want us there at all. Oddly enough, I turned up there once on a jam night & was asked to play. I went down well, but I suspect it was because I was using a borrowed guitar with a lots of gain dialed into the rig. I dont normally sound like that. If rock has to survive like that, perhaps it should die. It will always continue to inform my playing though.
  2. It was a womans song. Dylan sang it with the womans lyric in his early days. Yes it was about prostitution. When the animals covered it, Eric Burden sang a different lyric.(from a man's perspective). I assumed it was he that changed it, but I could be wrong.
  3. Cold Jordan - Grateful Dead double score!
  4. I just googled 'mosh pits'. Thank %$*# I dont like metal.
  5. Hey Linda. Did you eventually make a choice?
  6. Now that sounds reasonable. It is what I experience & can relate to your explanation much better. I will try the tap closer to the left hand. I actually both finger pick & flat pick (no not together). As already explained I will not cut my fingernails to enable better tapping. I have 42 years invested in my fingerstyle technique and I value it beyond anything tapping can offer me. If it means I need to abandon the simple tap example Ive explained, then so be it, but I'll try for a while longer yet.

    Which Synth?

Well thats what I hope you would say. I have no problem with using a PC that way. I have mac & PC. I would prefer to use the PC.

    Which Synth?

ok Mike The Session Strings link you provided. That looks like a sampler software add-on. If im right, does this mean you have to use a PC to use it? Or can it work ok using with controller keyboard alone? (I dont record with a PC).
  9. (wow, this thread is still running?) Hail Mary - 2Pac

    Which Synth?

I did google some youtube demos of the korg microstation. I used headphones to listen and was very impressed, especially as it comes in at half my budget. I had been concidering korg's X50, or even the M50. I think from the descriptions they must both be romplers. The main advantage of those would appear to be the keys themselves. Session Strings Pro. I'll have another google. (what are cc's ?) You have been most helpful Mike. Thank you.
  11. Ah, I have no aspiration to be one. The simple example I have given is all that interests me for the present. The thing is, I cant even get that to work. That is why I asked the question. The way I have tried to use it, is just as a additional hammer on really. I dont know why it sounds weak or why it picks up the additional vibration. (Its not as if the guitar knows which hand is employed right?)
  12. TOR, Good advice. I know the noise problem follows me out of the room so its not the room itself. The sound rises & falls. I have read up on the balanced line circuit and studied the diagram. I dont know if I have one though or not, and because no vendor describes them as 'balanced line' I dont know where I can buy one. Its bugging me.
  13. This is how I anticipate the use of a tap. Will it work? It works for the hammer on. Why wouldnt it work for the additional tap? I have no interest in using both hands with this technique. I would use a keyboard instead.
  14. Right. Thanks. I am suspicious of the mic lead. The local shop are useless. I need to look online, but have become paranoid that I will get another inferior lead.

    Which Synth?

TOR I have tried out 2 synths in shops. I was not impressed. They were hardly better than the 25 year old job I fetched out of my closet. That is why I am asking here SO i know what to try next. Mike, No. The piano sounds in the vid are not unnatural. I already said piano sounds are good on everything out there, which exempts the piano sounds from my naturlistic comment. This means I am satisfied that pianos should be good on everything. I want realistic acoustic sounds, not electronic fireworks. You are, I think making the point that keys that use samples (romplers) are better. Presumably this means you can buy better ones to load into them.
  16. Mike, I asked about an open string. I dont understand what you mean by an open note. When I state 'open string ' I understand that it is damped at the nut. You explained this patiently several times. I dont need further iteration. With respect, I dont think you understand what I am asking. When I say... If I understand you correctly, the above example wont work, even if dampening is used, because the the finger does not move from the 3rd fret while the hammer on and the tap occurs. What I think you mean is this (assuming the guitarist is right handed), that you must let go of the string entirely where the tap occurs (so it is open but damped); that it cannot be already fretted by the left hand. This is what I am asking.
  17. John, Guys, When I said 'double shielded mic cable' I meant 'balanced line' . This is what the recording manual I am studying calls it. I have been looking for a couple of days. So far Ive just been confused because none are described as 'balanced line', but balanced or shielded (they should all be shielded I think) and prices vary from £3 to £80 and that is bewildering. Can anyone recommend a decent balanced line XLR mic cable? A link would be great. John, where in the chain are signal conditioners used? I imagined between mic and recorder. Is that right?

    Which Synth?

Ok I listened to it, all of it. I would have liked to have heard some more naturalistic sounds, but its a good demo nevertheless. I find everything out there delivers good piano sounds, even my old General Music keys does that ok. Convincing orchestral sounds would be make me happy. Im not interested in reproducing pop sounds.
  19. Really ? You must listen to players that I dont. The most common bends I hear are isolated. BTW, What you describe wont work with a Floyd Rose bridge. Its the reason why I disable the damned things. I will do bends while holding 1, 2 or even 4 other strings down. On a floating bridge all but the bending strings will slide flat. Sounds awful. Back to tapping: So the example I gave in the last post is not what tappers do right? Are you saying that the tapped string remains open at all times?

    Which Synth?

Wow, thank you Mike. You have expanded my question (or do I mean exploded?). I think I need to do a bunch more research again..... rompler? That was a 1st world war German Aircraft I think.... umm.. no it was a Rumpler. Hey I'd love one of those too. Ok Korg microstation. Excuse me but I must google now.
  21. Wonderful. Innovative blend of techniques and best of all a natural feel that can resonate with all (ok then 'lots') of us....
  22. I bought a new guitar this year. Almost exactly the same as my old one, except the new one has to have a 9v battery installed. Now this put me off at first, and its true that I am still struggling to get the sort of sounds that I am accustomed to. However, a strange benefit has arisen. I reported a troublesome noise (in studio area forum) while recording a acoustic guitar instrumental. In the past I tried to use my solid electric with an 'acoustic' patch from the Boss signal processor. This did solve the noise problem, but introduced a new one, every time I took my hands off the guitar, the dreaded 'hum' made an unwelcome appearance. I tried this again with the new guitar, and no hum! The recording is pretty good and best of all, completely clean. Active pickups are actually good for something after all.
