  1. Hi, I hate the phrase "LIfe getting in the way". It presupposes that life being lived is in some way less valuable than stamp collecting, trout fishing, off road biking, music (whatever your interest is). I like to vist profiles, to meet new people so when I saw the first line from this I had to say hi and share this lyric. I hope you don't hate it too bad. Life Gets In The Way Remember when our romance was brand new And not a thing for love we wouldn’t do We had time for a smile and a gentle touch And when it came to lovin’ we couldn’t get enough But sometimes---------------------- {Chorus Life gets in the way The simple facts of livin’ Day to day When we try to talk it out Can’t find the words to say Yeah sometimes Life gets in the way Turnaround 4 bars Now Judi needs her braces and Bobby wants a car When we cash our paychecks they never stretch that far It seems we’re always arguin’ and when we go to bed We should reach for each other but turn away instead And sometimes---------------------- {Chorus Life gets in the way The simple facts of livin’ Day to day When we try to talk it out Can’t find the words to say Yeah sometimes Life gets in the way I ‘m not sure how to fix this but--------------- {Bridge I know we have to try Cause we can’t go on livin’ Just tryin’ to get by Instrumental Break 8 Bars But sometimes Love can find a way If we work together Each and every day We need to find that romance Search for the things to say Yeah sometimes Love can find a way Remember when our romance was brand new And not a thing for love we wouldn’t do Copyright 2011 John W. 2. Hi Areeson, Before you can become great at anything you have to be passionate about it, which you say you are. Without the passion, practice becomes work, and maybe you feel you don't have the talent because it felt like work before. Everything I have ever done in life I have worked my butt off to be the best I can be. That is what you need to do. If you do that you will never regret putting the work in because you will know you gave it your all. If end the end that is not good enough, still you will have chased your dream. Good luck!
  3. Hi, You will get a much better response if you start a topic on introduce yourself then post under musicians lounge with that question.
  4. Thank you. You may not hear it in my accent, but I'm a down home boy, born in the south then my parents moved us to NJ when I was 5. I still ain't forgave 'em. Here's another family portrait: My Uncle Earl The first time I saw uncle Earl I did what was expected I never noticed he was there Just totally neglected I didn’t see he never slouched The steel within his eyes The muscles rippling everywhere Took years to realize He was an ordinary hero------------------------------ {Chorus This man my Uncle Earl His outside like an oyster But deep inside the pearl How many never noticed This man my Uncle Earl This man my Uncle Earl He lived with my grandma I thought it was to hide His failure in society Ah, but what’s inside Passing by his room one day I saw some pictures there A soldier returned home from war His medals everywhere He was an ordinary hero------------------------------ {Chorus This man my Uncle Earl His outside like an oyster But deep inside the pearl How many never noticed This man my Uncle Earl This man my Uncle Earl Him on a motorcycle With women by the score This man I had overlooked I found was so much more I finally sat and talked to him Asked him why would he Settle for this dull life With all that he could be Turnaround 8 bars He said this here’s my Mama with no one else to care--------------- {Bridge I promised her when all had gone I would be standing here He was an ordinary hero------------------------------ {Chorus This man my Uncle Earl His outside like an oyster But deep inside the pearl How many never noticed This man my Uncle Earl This man my Uncle Earl This man MY Uncle Earl Copyright 2007 John W. 5. My brothers and I used to have an agreement, sort of. we didn't make lots of money but we all got checks back during tax time and whichever of us got one took the rest out drinking till all of the money was gone. Interesting times. I think we would have gotten along well with your family. It's a fun lyric.
  6. Hi All, I see John puts up all the challenges so i wanted to see if another John could. I'd like to see how many songs/lyrics about your family you can come up with. I will share one to start if off. Sorry, no prizes. Rebels From the Northlands He was from Connecticut, she from the Garden State Running from her family, Running from his fate Her alcoholic father had quite a heavy hand The rules out of a bottle she couldn’t understand His brothers were all perfect, he was the blackest sheep His parent’s expectations, he could never meet Rebels from the northlands--------------------------------------------------- {Chorus Ended up down south Rebels from the northlands Lived from hand to mouth Looking for a new life Trying to fit in What would be the chances She’d end up with him Neither one had any clue, each would find their mate In a diner east of Dallas, that took the hardhat trade Their glances met across a plate she served of eggs ’n grits As magically they saw what would be a perfect fit That was fifty years and more ‘n now I tell their tale My Mom and Dad have passed but their memory won’t pale Rebels from the northlands--------------------------------------------------- {Chorus Ended up down south Rebels from the northlands Lived from hand to mouth Looking for a new life Trying to fit in What would be the chances She’d end up with him Instrumental break 12 bars Rebels from the northlands----------------------------------------------- {Chorus Ended up down south Rebels from the northlands Lived from hand to mouth Looking for a new life Trying to fit in What would be the chances She’d end up with him That was fifty years and more ‘n now I tell their tale-------------- 4 bars My Mom and Dad have passed but their memory won’t pale Copyright 2020 John W. 7. Hi James, The first/only rock band I ever played in, circa 1965, had a lead guitarist so talented he could listen to anything a couple of times then play it lick for lick. We won a battle of the bands and cut a 45. The band fell apart when the guitarist, a friend of mine, and the drummer both landed in an asylum from bad trips on acid. The guitarist, to my knowledge, never got out. What a waste. He is not the only person i have seen ruined by drugs, and before anyone thinks I am holier than thou, I did more than my share in the late 60' early 70's. Good luck with your song.
  8. For those who never heard of them, this is It's a Beautiful Day, doing "White Bird", 2 versions, live and studio. David La Flamme was a pioneer of the rock Violin and his sister, Linda Had a great voice too. The studio version is a lot cleaner, of course. They were a San Fransisco band along with Jefferson Airplane and Big Brother and the Holding Company, Joplin's band
  9. Well John, I am going to post one I wrote to send to one of my favorite artists, Norah Jones. I know it's not written on the spot, but.... I put it to music, and sent a copy to her manager and got a nice letter from her in return. I really wish I had sung it but it was before I found out I could sing again, and it does drag. Link and lyrics below: https://www.soundclick.com/music/songInfo.cfm?songID=4367558 For Norah Her voice was so incredible I hung on every word---------------- {Chorus It was the sweetest music My soul had ever heard I felt it wrap around me It fit me like a glove She sang about her heartache Of never ending love I never knew emotion Could pour out in a voice I followed on every syllable I never had a choice Her voice was so incredible I hung on every word---------------- {Chorus It was the sweetest music My soul had ever heard Then my blues disappeared When she sang them out loud She lifted up my spirit I floated like a cloud If sound was made of honey It wouldn’t be as sweet And I would never have my fill It’s all I’d ever eat Her voice was so incredible I hung on every word---------------- {Chorus It was the sweetest music My soul had ever heard Instrumental Break Her voice was so incredible I hung on every word---------------- {Chorus It was the sweetest music My soul had ever heard You say that I exaggerate Then listen for yourself You’ll leave your other music Alone up on the shelf The one who captivates me So deep within my bones No one can caress a note As smooth as Norah Jones No one else sings quite as sweet As lovely Norah Jones Copyright 2005 John W. 10. Very well done interview, the only thing i would change is from the text to someone live giving the questions. Thanks for sharing
  11. Saw him in concert in Long Beach, CA, circa '71, along with Bloomfield Bues band, It's a Beautiful Day (If you don't know their music, look it up), Mountain, Janis, Jefferson Airplane, and about 3 more. The tickets were $10, and one of the best concerts you'd ever want to see as a rock fan. He did about 1/3 of his set on his "Shitar", it was great. I saw every major rock and folk band out there from '68-'73. PS Did you check out Ladyva? It is pronounced "La Diva"
  12. I know, for a lyricist, this might be considered a strange choice, but c'mon, This lady can play!
  13. Thanks for the quick response. Here are some of mine you can check out. You may have to cut and paste. www.soundclick.com/johnwselleck  www.soundclick.com/johnselleck www.soundclick.com/johnsings  . I also have 100+ more on demo. Personally,  I find it very hard to write lyrics to music. I do write mostly country but I have some that go in other directions. I have some on the lyrics critique forum right now, if you like, see what you think of them. That way I will know the best other lyrics to send to you.  I have at least 100+ other lyrics looking for music. Please shoot me an email at jaysell50@protomail.com and we can do this easier. Here is a lighthearted one you may like:

    Green Pond Scum

    Pepperoni pizzas
    Gave me the weirdest dream
    Caught up in the fantasy
    Doin’ things I’ve never seen
    Dragonfly’s were hov’rin’
    Skimmers leavin’ lines
    Tadpoles watchin’ from below
    Man it was a time

This must be the strangest-------------- {Chorus
    Thing I’ve ever done
    Playin’ ping pong with
    Green pond scum
    Bullfrog blows the bubbles
    Hey come get you some
    Playin’ ping pong with
    Green pond scum

    Webs between my fingers
    Made a paddle sweet
    Spinnin’ bubbles through the air
    The colors were unique
    Mama duck ‘n ducklin’s
    Watchin’ from the shore
    We kept that bullfrog busy
    Burpin’ up some more

This must be the strangest-------------- {Chorus
    Thing I’ve ever done
    Playin’ ping pong with
    Green pond scum
    Bullfrog blows the bubbles
    Hey come get you some
    Playin’ ping pong with
    Green pond scum

Every time we popped one-------------- {Bridge
Out came a great big croak
    Sometimes just on purpose
    I’d give them a poke

This must be the strangest-------------- {Chorus
    Thing I’ve ever done
    Playin’ ping pong with
    Green pond scum
    Bullfrog blows the bubbles
    Hey come get you some
    Playin’ ping pong with
    Green pond scum

    Instrumental Break

This must be the strangest-------------- {Chorus
    Thing I’ve ever done
    Playin’ ping pong with
    Green pond scum
    Bullfrog blows the bubbles
    Hey come get you some

    1. Lisa Gates

awesome. I did try to find her but the "dr" was the key i didn't have for the search. Going backwards and answering newer post before the older ones... backwards and out of order are pretty typical ways to go for me. LOL thank you very much!
