  7. Do you have a decent Mic? I would say the audio interface gives you options to plug in other instruments directly.. Keyboards, electric guitars, bass guitars, acoustics with bugs... You may not gave access to them now, but you might, especially if you start working with other musicians. I will have a look at the latest and let you know my thoughts. Are there any specific interfaces you are considering?

  9. It most cases we look for stresses to be the same as they are in natural speech. Look up scansion. It is something we do all the time. Try it and see. Pick a few words and try changing the stressed syllables. Failing that, many dictionaries indicate the stressed syllables. Take "location" you could change the emphasis in different ways (and in some cases it depends on your accent) LOcation loCAtion locaTION What one do you think is most likely?

  11. Hey Well you mention a couple of issues... Too much noise Sounds horrible For No.1 there are many causes. Most common is environmental noise spilling onto the recording, such as computer fans, electrical hum from TV, computers, household electrics etc, plus passing traffic, family moving around etc. It stands to reason that you should find a place that avoids all that. Preferably a room with loads of soft furnishings to absorb sound (when lacking a proper stuidio environment) Then there is noise from the circuitry of the gear you are using. Barring replacing gear the only thing you can really do to reduce noise is to route your cables in a way that they are kept away from power leads, or midi leads, or digital leads... that's right, keep them all as apart as possible. Thirdly, your mic polar pattern, and the boost settings should be correct. Generally avoid the circle polar pattern (that's the button with the shapes above it). Choose the one that shows a dent in it! This means that it picks up well from in front of the mic, but little from behind. Then orient your mic so the front points towards you when singing. There is usually a marker to indicate the front. Check your mic input and set your mic boost accordingly. In essence it boosts the mic output by 10dB. When you sing, don't go any closer than a hand's breadth away. Try to keep the gain control as low as possible while being audible. This is a good place to start. You can then tweak to your heart's content as you learn what setting gets you a good recording. Sorry, I have to go for now, but hopefully this gets you started at improving your vocals recording.

  15. Okay, so you know (I hope) that it is an optical illusion. The nozzle is moving up and down, projecting the water either closer or further away... that, in combination with the velocity of the water is what creates the basic wave shape. Add in the effect of gravity and you get the wave form growing in amplitude as it heads towards the ground. Very similar to the effect where you observe a spoked wheel and depending on the speed the wheel rotates at the wheel appears to be either going backwardsm forwards or stays still. The exact speed depends on the distance between the spoke and the frame rate of the video. I understand that the same phenomenon can be observed "live", due to vibration of the eye. In essence it works like this: The frame rate of most video is 30 frames per second. If we look at a sound wave of 30 Hertz, the wave would appear to stand still as the wave would be in exactly the same position in every frame as the sound wave repeats 30 times a second, ie it's repeat period is excatly that of an indiviual frame. So the wave appears to stand still. If you then increase the frequency a little, say to 31 Hz, the wave would appear to go in reverse, ie the water appears to climb. If you go to 29 Hz the wave would appear to go forwards.

  23. Hi David i believe that was the common ways of achieving subliminal advertising, but in essence it is any method that gets the advertising message to our subconscious without being noticed. For example, the skull drawn into ice cubes of whiskey in a glass to hype of the being dangerous and edgy feel that drinkers liked to flirt with having. You could see the skull if you looked for it. Product placement in TV and movie works on this principle of "hiding in plain sight". We see the apple logo on the computers being used in a movie, but it isn't an obvious advertisement. Sure, we are a bit more clued in these days and we can spot obvious product placement, for example getting close ups of an iphone 4 in a movie... if it is done believably it works as a subliminal advertisement, if the viewer spots it because it wasn't believably worked into the plot it is just an advertisement. In audio, you are right, it is pretty well the methods you mention, but arguably background music could be classed as subliminal... depending just how noticeable it is. Too loud, probably too obvious, then it isn't exactly subliminal. Not enough activity and action in the foreground, then that too might make it more noticable. We see brands all the time on TV and film... but only occasionally does our "That's product placement" alarm go off.
