  8. Hi gang Gabriel, Tom and I were discussing the trend to ignore seeking permission from a publisher to record a cover. Some of the points raised were: That if it is a commercial release you will be pursued for a share of the money at some point. That getting a sync license to legitimately release the song is easier than you think. although there is a degree of lack of understanding, it is more a deliberate act, maybe defiance, maybe convenience. For the YouTube posters the simple fact is focused on convenient, quick promo. But the fact that repercussions, both financial and career, can easily be avoided, are the reasons above the only reasons? is there anything that would make more musicians recording cover songs seek permission to use them legitimately? Do you feel you understand the process of getting a sync license? There is an article in the Songstuff library all about cover songs, does it provide the right info at the right level? http://business.songstuff.com/article/cover_song_quagmire/ I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts and perspective on this? What is your experience of sync license? Can you offer any advice? What would you say to new or inexperienced artists to encourage them to go through the proper channels? Any comments, suggestions, observations or advice you can offer would be great. cheers John PS please share /like / tweet the topic. raising awareness that seeking and getting sync licenses is relatively straight forward is a good thing!
  9. Hi Max, I enjoyed listening. You have a pretty good voice though I would be interested in hearing some more tracks to get a better idea of your vocal range. I get feeling you have much broader range. A good job on the vid too. The lip sync could be a bit tighter though.
  10. Actually no, bohemian rhapsody ballad sections use either Bb or Eb, I just ran through the melody instead of guessing lol
  11. Hmm there are no doubt plenty, including one of two of my own. I think there are a couple on Supertramp's "crime of the century", lik "Rudi", I think also "Teardrop" by massive attack fits the bill, plus tracks by Groove Armada, Air, Morcheeba, even Black Sabbath. I will rack my brains to come up with a specific other than teardrop. Hmm, maybe also tracks by Radiohead and Portishead. Hmmm. I don't think I am misremembering the keys of these songs or that these artists have several each that would fit the bill. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, progressive but certainly a mix.
  12. Hey Normally they can be replaced, but even with experience it can go wrong. Much depends on your keyboard model. I recommend puting it into a shop that will do the replacement for you. Often they use a specialist, sometimes the manufacturer. What is the make and model Jon? One other possibility presents itself as a possible work around.. That is if you have a computer and you have midi. If you are talking default patches you should be able to get a list of the patches and select the patches via midi from the computer. Clunky but it would allow you to select sounds. Did anything happen that may have caused the failure? For example the keyboard being dropped or something dropped on the keyboard? Lastly, you seem to be able to find it (albeit with difficulty) using a torch... How does that work if it is blank? Is the text displayed but the backlight is blown?

  16. All that said, I think Max did a pretty good job. Pretty good job on the vid too, though the lip synch was a little out at points. I find myself agreeing with both Gabriel and Tom... On one hand it is infringing copyright to release a cover, on the other hand virtually no one pays attention to copyright in the realm of non commercial recordings, and only artists and copyright owners pay it any attention in the commercial world. That isn't going to change as long as governments don't care, and that isn't going to change as long as large future tech organisations like Google can see some free mileage in allowing it. Sad but true. Max, as an artist, I know recording covers can seem like a great idea to get you known. Longer term though it can get you in a lot of financial trouble. You can of course seek permission from publishers to do covers legitimately. Alternatively you can do originals! Cheers John
